A wish from a young dying man

My first reaction was to make a snide pun about dying with dignity, in fact I did write it and then I deleted it. Here is a more considered answer..

I have worked in the Palliative Care field (as well as in neuro rehab) - the loss of sexual identity is a major factor in patients spiritual and psychological wellbeing. The fact that his hospice have recognised this and addressed it without the involvement of Church politicians is commendable.

I do find it distasteful that they have chosen to splash it all over the newspapers and the Internet though.

This subject brings to mind the 1971 made film with Timothy Bottoms as the star, "Johnny got his gun". The film is anti war and traces the life of an American soldier, from his days prior to joining the army in 1917. The story is told in flash back. Our "hero" is badly wounded and loses all his limbs. The film is heart wrenching and not for the faint hearted. There is a scene where a caring female nurse, masturbates our heroic soldier. He falls in love with his loving nurse.

I too wish they had kept the story out of the news and off the internet. It just seems so personal and private a story. But my congratulations to the hospice for doing something to bring joy and pleasure to this remarkable young man.

Oh what a loss :##:
Sometimes wanting everything is not wanting EVERYTHING

So for those who would rather keep it in private you don´t consider it "inspirational" enough.

Oh Belamy, give it a rest.

Not everything in American life revolves around "inspiration" like you'd like to believe.:##:

It's ana rticle that talks about a good deed from a hospice, a sad situation for one man, and a topic that is just a little bit unexpected.

We think it should be private because it was a private and personal matter for him. It's a nice moment an interesting moment in the lives of several people for one person, but it was also private and personal.

From this paragraph:

Mr Wallis has decided to talk in public about his decision as part of the BBC documentary series
about life inside Douglas House and its associated hospice for children, Helen House.

I would take it that the young man made the decision to talk about it.

I found the original article worth the time: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/01/27/nvirgin27.xml

leave it to Fox to go with a story like this.

I did note this part -

Sister Frances, the founder of the hospice, described Wallis as "delightful, intelligent and aware young man."

"I know that some people will say 'You are a Christian foundation. What are you thinking about?' But we are here for all faiths and none," she said.

"It is not our job to make moral decisions for our guests. We came to the conclusion that it was our duty of care to support Nick emotionally and to help ensure his physical safety."

right on Sister! A lot of us are there and it very seldom gets reported so maybe good comes from this should be private story being public.

I don´t attack personal attitudes like you´d like to believe, but the predating beliefs that substitute personal reasoning for self-righteous attitudes.

Everyone´s attitude is self-righteous because it´s our own... but the problem is more concerning when the majority feels their right is more righteous because they are simply... more... and doesn´t feel there is anything to change about their attitude until they are force-fed with a new self-righteous attitude.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but you keep bringing it up. Is every bit of interesting news that's human interest always going to be another example of "people needing inspiration" to you?

I typically detest human interests stories, too, but I don't find this one preachy. I just find it to be a story about something counterintuitive happening.

Yes John it nice to leave it to Fox. It is nice that a news agency can report on a feel good/human touch story and leave the troubles of the World//US behind for a change. :=D:
