Hopefully someone here will be able to help me out.

I have been trying to find a way to add hardcode subtitles to a movie. With ConvertXtoDvd I know how to add the subtitles file before burning the movie. I usually need to hit the subtitle button when the movie is playing for the subs to work. What I want to do is add hardcode subs to the movie without having to hit the sub button. Just like original DVD's would do. Confusing but if anyone could help I would appreciate it.

Can you please tell me how you do it with VLC.

Since you're already using ConvertXToDVD, it might make sense to stay with that product. Have you explored the "advanced" settings in the subtitle menu of ConvertXToDVD? I ask because if you haven't yet, give it a shot - if you have and it's still not working, that's another thing and you might need to describe your problem in more detail. There is also a generally regarded difference (amongst the different kind of software) between "forced subtitles" and "default subtitle track" - the "forced subtitle" is where let's say 95% of your movie takes place in English but has a scene or two where characters aren't speaking English to each other, and what they're saying will be translated and displayed as a forced subtitle that your DVD player is displaying (assuming the translation isn't part of the actual film's picture, as sometimes happen). A "default subtitle" is let's say you want English 100% of the time for the entire movie, where everything the characters say is also a subtitle. For your example you might want to differentiate going-in.

For ConvertXToDVD, there's a thread about the default subtitle option being there as of version 5.0.0.52. These screenshots are from its official PDF guide.

Go to "Subtitle" tab and use the three little elipses icon at the far right:

Then checkmark "Show Advanced"

The menu will open up a little bit. Take note of the bottom two options, "Set as default for playback" and "Embed this subtitle into video":

That second option "Embed this subtitle into video" will always work as you're actually writing the text into the image itself - no way for the player to turn it on or off. It's not the most "graceful" way to handle things, but it works.

For the first option, "Set as default for playback", I did a test and it worked fine. I took two attempts with the same 60 second clip - one with "Set as default for playback" and one without, and wrote a DVD-type structure (VIDEO_TS etc.) and burned that with USB key to my device that will play it off the USB in DVD format (with menu, etc.) that way. "Set as default for playback" worked as expected - I saw every line without changing a subtitle option. Unchecking it showed me nothing until I manually enabled the subtitles. Some people have said you might need to verify the subtitle default language (like "English") matches the audio stream description for "Set as default for playback" to work; in the screenshots above from the ConvertXToDVD manual, it's "unspecified".

Thank you trinket for helping me out. I was finally able to do it with ConvertXToDVD 5. It's so easy just going to the show advanced section. One big problem I had was that I was still using version 4. Version 4 doesn't have that option. I really don't like the way version 5 looks but as long as it does the job I'll learn to love it. Thank you trinket.

Yeah, it took me a little while to get used to the user interface/look & feel changes of ConvertXtoDVD 5 after moving up from version 4. But you'll get used to it and the added benefits such as some image quality improvement and those advanced options (and many others; see their changelog for instance) - and the icons/tabs representing individual traits like audio, subtitles, etc. - are really worth it.

Has anyone had problems with ConvertXToDVD 5? It was working good for me but now the preview window won't open at all. I have tried 2 different versions and it won't work. The preview window opens for about a second then just closes automatically again.

No problems here. But it might be either very tiny or getting minimized. This thread might help you out with some ideas.

If it's just the preview window, you should be able to proceed normally. Try and see what happens. After all, you don't need to preview to actually perform the conversion. :)

You might also try installing the latest Beta in the event it was some issue that was corrected. As a last resort, you can do a clean install and not preserve any settings that might already be defaulted (or become part of your XML-based .XTODVD file).
