I don't think you're overreacting, Ger. Your concert would, indeed, be overshadowed by Il Divo. Any advertising you do would get lost. Now, I know that not everyone is a fan of Il Divo, but I think you deserve every chance you can squeeze out of this. All the music critics are going to be at the Il Divo concerts. If you move the date, you might drop a few hints to the local papers about your concert. Who knows what could come of that?

You're never going to find a date without competition, but you're talking Il Divo here. I sincerely doubt if you're the only person rescheduling events around them.

I think you should leave the date as is.

There have already been too many reasons to postpone and every time you do it there's a "broken promise" sent to your sub-conscious, kind of like saying I'm going to start my diet on Monday and then not doing it.

I don't think Il Divo is your competition. I think your competition is self-doubt or fear or something like that.

Go forward, Gerry. Now is your time.

I'm just wanting to give myself the best "chance" I can.
I know.

You'll do the right thing.

Go with your gut.

It's good to get our input but ultimately the advice that sounds right echoes what you already know.

, to be honest, I often feel I'm talking to myself when addressing my fellow JUBBERS...
Why is that?

Change the date Ger. You have more talent then those handsome singers! But they do have the media machine behind them. Adjust your date so that you can take full advantage of whatever publicity you can garner. Best of luck!

I base that on remarks, comments, or replies to various and sundry, or the lack of same thereof, that I've tossed out here from time to time.
Okay.

Not entirely sure what you mean.

But okay.

Yes.
Move the Date.
Forward a week-or-so wont hurt anyone.
It'll be the better option for you, and chances are your Target Audience will attend your concert, aswel as Il Divo.

That's what I'd do. ;)

Is your target audience the same as Il Divo? I mean really, would people rather go see some over-hyped glamour boys over a new local talent?

Seriously, though, Vancouver is a big city just like Toronto. Here, there's never a date you can pick that's not going to conflict with some other major event. All you have to do is check out wholenote magazine on-line. Since this is your first major event, you should just see what happens and who comes out (mostly friends and family and the odd curious person or local "free concert guy"). You've had such trouble arranging the date that it seems silly to choose another now unless you're assured of something within a week's time.

Anyway, best of luck with whatever you choose.

Hi Ger, it's Nelz. I guess you already know my thoughts on this (that there will always be other events that will conflict with your chosen date). However, remember what Katherine said last Tuesday night: April 28 is a payday weekend, and people will go out more and spend money (unless of course some major act comes to town).

You also might want to check out what other events are playing on that weekend. If you feel that they won't take a huge chunk of your audience, then go for it. You could also follow what your gut feels.

Hope everything goes well, and know that you have my support. ;-)

BTW I just realized this is my first post EVER here at JUB....

You know, Il Divo are coming to Cape Town end of this month for two sold-out shows, so that gives you an idea of how popular they are.

Michael Jackson couldn't sell out 2 shows in Cape Town; U2, Bon Jovi, Sting, Bryan Adams, Metallica and others couldn't even sell out 1 show in Cape Town (although admittedly those were stadium gigs and the Il Divo one is not; but still...).

Best of luck with it, whenever you decide to have it.

Whilst I have always had every faith in your talents as long as I've had the pleasure of knowing you Ger, personally, I would move the date back a week or two. To stick with your original date would mean that your marketing would be overshadowed by the massive marketing machine of Il Divo. The local community - gay and straight - and the media will be working themselves into a frenzy and you wouldn't get a look-in.

By moving to a following weekend, it will give you an opportunity to 'piggy back' on the success of Il Divo's concert. For the local radio and newspapers you can use Il Divo as a lead-in along the lines of 'If you enjoyed Il Divo, then you'll....etc'.

As has already been mentioned, the weekend after the concert is also pay weekend, so I would be tempted to reserve a big push during the two weeks between Il Divo and you.

Whilst your music is different to the operatic sound of Il Divo, there is still a massive crossover potential and so I would also look at getting permission to do 'exit leafleting' at the Il Divo concert. Although many of the attendees will have travelled from outside of Vancouver, there will still be enough from within the Vancouver area. It basically comes down to cost.

You might also talk to the council and see if it's possible to piggy back on one of the civic theatre's mailshots - which is sometimes possible with city authorities.

On this ocassion I don't think it's a case of self-belief, but much more a case of a sensible business move. I've moved various production dates in order to avoid competition and maximise the potential - there's nothing wrong with doing it. (I've also moved dates to deliberately go head to head to slap the competition - but that's another strategy altogether! ;) )

Sounds great Gery...,,Best of luck...and mega cudos..| ..| .
I could check with some astrologer friends if you like..

Is this by chance happening at St. Pauls on Jervis and Pendrell?
