I'm just disgustingly sick of the whole damn species that we would even need an age of consent.
 
I'm torn on this topic. On the one hand I think we need an Age of Consent to protect teenagers and kids from creeps; on the other hand, I can remember being a horny 12 year old who would have sold his soul to fuck every man over the age of 30 he saw.

I was also the demanding kid - when I was 14 I saw (read, shagged) a man regularly, I would even go so far as to call him my boyfriend, who was 44 and when I stopped seeing him, 45. Now, this was may be unusual, but there was never any manipulation on his part and I was never negatively affected by the time I spent with him, except that he was married and that was my reason for eventually walking away. People can feel and think what they like, but each person's interaction with each other individual is different and the balances vary tremendously.

There cannot be an international 'age of consent' for a similar reason: Cultural training and socialisation varies so greatly from one region to another, from one educational experience to another, and so on, that one can't generalise and expect that all people will have reached a similar stage of dvelopment by a specific age universally. That said, 16 in the more advanced countries seems realistic, and 16 in the more hindered countries seems more realistic too, but for different reasons.

Federal law says that 18 is the age of majority, not the age of consent. Also, if the states are ruling something that goes against federal law, unless someone takes it to the supreme court, then it's still a state decision.

Anyways, I think it should be about 15 or 16. It's hard to say because every experience is so subjective. And I agree it differs based on gender too. My friend once made a very compelling argument that there should be no age of consent whatsoever (the same argument as Camille Paglia and Foucault) because the government shouldn't makes laws regulating sexuality, and that there are already rape laws, so if there were no age of consent and someone did something without consent, it should just be considered rape, plain and simple. I don't agree with him though, I mean, of course someone could manipulate a little kid and use coercion to get the 'consent' they want.

I agree with both of you, I would say 15 or 16. Although, when I was 12, I started a 6 year affair with a married man, he was 30 years older than I was. I met him in our local library, I noticed him adjusting his crotch (innocently, like we do a thousand times a day) and he caught me staring. I had already been sucking dick for awhile and I just asked him if he needed help with that itch. Needless to say he was in shock, but he got over it. We continued until I went away to college. I was always aware of how much trouble he would have gotten into and it always seemed so unfair, since he gave me so much pleasure and I wanted it just as much as he did.
 
Except that "people" don't think this way - - there could and probably should be different threshholds for boys than girls --
These laws were most likelywrittin with girls in mind -- parents wanting to keep older boys from screwing their virginal daughters.
But a 15 year old boy wanting to play in the shed is not gonna come home pregnant -- and as said here - he's more likely to initiate it that be a "victim" can he still become a victim and be "used" by an 'adult" yes - he can. so there are trade-offs.

This has nothing to do, of course with pedo's hanging around schoolyards trying to lure kids into their van --

I hear your RSTONE1 -but even in todays world - where kids grow up really really fast - there are not many 12 year olds who have thought out the possible consequences of teasing an older man. You just happened to be lucky he didn't fuck you and slit your throat.

i think age of consent law is over done.
I remember i was secretly looking at mens bulge when i was 10 plus (not sure).

Its my choice to want to touch those bulges when i was young ...
 
The age of consent should be 15-16 years old for male and female. i think sex should be taught at the age of 13 kids are growing up early instead of stopping them from having sex at a young age talk about protection and if kids are having sex make it easier for them to get condoms..

Here in Texas, the age of consent is seventeen. There is a "Romeo and Juliet" clause as well (two years difference over fourteen).

I think the age of consent should be revisited. (Fat chance!) I would advocate lowering it to sixteen, and I could probably be convinced of fifteen.

There should absolutely positively no disparity between the sexes. Where this occurs, generally the age of consent has been higher for the males. Regardless, it would be a violation of gender equality in my opinion.

There are already laws that prohibit sex within certain relationships of disparate power, e.g. teacher/student, even where both are over the age of consent. Those should remain in place.
