For the record, Al Jazeera is a well respected news organisation that shows very little bias. For that reason alone, it should be a welcome addition to news media in the US.

And variety is better anyway. BBC America is a nice dose of something different, and it will be good to have a new one.

Wow, just thinking of Current TV when it was brand new...I LOVED IT IN ITS ORIGINAL FORMAT!!!!!! Their "thing" wasn't yet entirely liberal but, instead, a LOT of viewer-generated content. That was SO very cool - just about anything could show up, even to the nth degree of über-bizarre. I was very fond of that show they used to have that showed strange and/or viral stuff from the internet. The original Current TV was a breath of fresh air, and the only channel truly TOTALLY DIFFERENT from anything else out there, to show up in recent years.

[EDIT: LET ME RETRACT THAT. ShortsHD has also shown up in recent years, and THAT is entirely different from anything else that has ever existed. A 24/7 channel of nothing but short films of all types! Very cool.]

I like Al Jazeera.
They are much much better and fair than Fox news.

I've never had more than abridged access to al-Jazeera, i.e. their brief news shows on Current, but I've always considered them to be one of the world's most BALANCED news sources that I'm currently aware of - certainly more so than any of the major "cable" "NEWS" stations. I don't like the idea of losing Jennifer Granholme and some of the others, but I look forward to having better access to al-Jazeera. As much as I like BBC, I also hope to get "the truth" about what's happening here in the USA, and BBC seems more Eurocentric, but it may be a function of when I happened to tune in.

Fox News continues to be the highest ranked news source on cable. None of the others come even close. The last article I read is that the channel was watched about equally by liberals and conservatives.

The liberals aren't watching it for news or because they like it. They're watching it because it's endemic in public places and because they're keeping an eye on what the crazies are saying. Rachel Maddow is Fox's worst nightmare... and while Fox may get more viewers overall, their ratings are fast sinking.

It's an atrocity that Fox even has "news" after it... it's not a news station. It's propaganda bullshit and if people had some sense they would view it for entertainment reasons. They should have a disclaimer "Don't believe a damn word on this station".

The post election reactions on Fox News was some of the best comedy I've seen in ages. Especially when Fox News Pretty Blonde Chick #3118 called out Karl Rove for using distorted math to delude Republicans into thinking that Romney had the election in the bag. You know Fox is too far gone when even one of the people they hire to sit still and look pretty points out that the Emperor has no clothes.

What Jack and the other FOX hounds don't still understand is that FNN's demographics are literally dying.

The average white male viewer age is ridiculously higher than the other networks. The demise of FOX is built into the very model of right wing 'news' and opinion that they created. And because Murdoch and Ailes are just inches from the mortician's beauty parlour.....it seems they aren't getting the message either.

In 5 years....barring any manufactured catastrophe like world war or assassinations, FOX's audience will be shrinking faster than the brains of those who are still watching.
