Ever since I've gotten back to school I've been really good about eating right and going to the gym every day, running for 25 - 30 minutes and doing some weights. I also walk a lot more than I was over the summer.

These are some really good changes that I've made but also since I've gotten back to school I've started drinking more than I was.

I usually only drink mixed drinks (usually vodka mixed with Diet Coke) and if I'm drinking beer I'll drink light beer.

So basically two questions here

If I'm in a situation where I'm drinking, is there anything that will make it not so harsh on the calories?

And

Is my drinking going to seriously hinder my losing weight, because if it will I'll just have not give into peer pressure and cut it out all together.

Thanks
Andy

The average beer has something like 100 calories.

Mixed drinks can be even more.

If you do captain and diet coke, you've only like 60-70 calories a drink.

If I know I'll be drinking heavily on a given day, I figure that into my daily caloric intake.

If you think I'm drinking domestic beer - alch!

Heineken is around 110 and so is Guinness if I'm not mistaken.

Becks, Amstel Light, Corona, are around 140ish.

Oh, 355mL bottles (12oz)

My friend was saying VODKA has very few calories. I begged to differ, since alcohol has 7 calories/gram, regardless. Does anyone know the calorie content of, say, a shot of Vodka?

Thanks for the responses guys.

I think the problem is not just the calories, but that it slows down one's metabolism, so while even if I adjust what I eat to match the amount that I drink, my ability to lose weight is still not where it should be.

It just sucks because the next two weekends I have parties and things to go to that are going to have drinking and I wanna participate :(

When I was on my non alcoholic diet (can you imagine me on tonic water for four mouths) I always made an exception for special occasions and had no problem getting back to the diet the next day.

Yeah, thats pretty much what I'm going to end up doing, but right now because we have off on Monday for Labor Day, and then the next week for umm.. I forget which holiday but that one too there are too much to classify as special occasions and more like, weekly occurences.

Hopefully it'll just be for the next two weeks.

I think like anything, drinking at a party once a weekend for two weekends isn't going to severely hinder your attempts at weight loss. I don't see weight loss as a rapid process anyway, so if you want to binge on alcohol where someone else would eat a brownie sundae, my advice is to stop splitting hairs and just do it. You'll just need to figure in what you've had for those past two weekends into your diet and exercise. The casual indulgence isn't going to ruin your chances of losing weight ever again when you're 19/20.

You're right about the metabolism thing... if you're at your weight and maintaining, then the occasional binge isn't going to make a difference but if you're still trying to get there then you're going to have to find a compromise... you should learn to drink only enough to maintain the mood but alternate with something without alcohol/calories for the thirst and screw peer pressure.

I quit my daily drinking regimen over a year ago. I weighed 185 then and I weigh 185 now...no change. I'm very disappointed as I was sure that I'd lose a few pounds and that alcohol was the culprit, but evidently 185 is what I'm meant to weigh. It's almost as if my body is fighting to stay at that weight. (I'm about 15 lbs. overweight.)

Quinns is very good it's made entirely from fruit even the alcohol comes from sweet fermented fruits it's in the UK not sure about US

You know what the funny thing about this is, you're underage if it shows correctly

But I agree with many others, no matters how much you exercise, the beer is gonna slow that metabolism down, virtually you'll bloat and as you get older, it probably gets worse :(

In addition to calories, you must, I say, mustconsider the salt content of your drinks. Also alcohol itself can
change your basic metabolism. If you are exercising and dieting,
I would suggest keep your getting high to enjoying being with
your friends. It will be easier on your wallet too.

The best you can do, aside from not drinking, is stick with no sugar mixes and go lightly. If you go all out, you'll be useless the next day, so you can count out that rigorous calorie burning run.

Drinking once in a while isn't going to throw you off. Just be sensible about it.

All I can tell you is that after I quit drinking I ate more and still lost weight.

Sweeter drinks are naturally higher in calories and carbos. Things like Baileys Irish Creme, Amaretto, Sambucco, Gran Marnier and most cordials are fairly high because of the sugar content.
Certain mixes like coke, 7-Up, orange juice and even tonic are higher than water, club soda or drinking it "neat".
I like beer occasionally but it always makes me bloat. My belt and shoes feel tighter within 20 minutes.
When I went to clubs more often I found dancing helped to offset weight gain as well as keeping me more sober.

Liver + Fat =Assimilation

Liver + Alcohol = Destruction

Fat + Destruction = Unwanted Results

Its not much about the calories since you can burn it quite easily if you do cardio exercise everyday. Its more of the Alcohol Effect. Either way, I'd avoid all together. Look, its fun to drink. But its for your own good to avoid. It really depends on you. (*8*)

i partied a lot and drank almost 3 times a week and was still able to lose about 50 pounds in 6 months, just make sure that if you're drunk u don't start eating crap, and keep exercising.

ps. when u exercise.. if it hurts.. then it means ur doing a good job. pain is only weakness leaving your body.
