(unless you built it yourself, of course)

Do I really need any of it? Like my "Cyberlink DVD Suite Deluxe ." Whatever that is. Doesn't Windows (Vista) already include whatever you would need to burn/view/etc. DVDs? My computer also has this PC Doctor Hardware Diagnostic thing, which I suppose is kind of nice. Microsoft Works, too (watered-down version of Office). And some other stuff as illustrated in the attached image.

I am asking because I am considering doing a clean installation of 64-bit Vista Ultimate on my HP computer (I currently have 64-bit Home Premium), and I would lose all that. I think I could probably do it as an upgrade and keep all the currently installed stuff, but I'd rather not. I'm a little scared to pull the trigger. I'm such a wimp.

Some of the items on this list I obviously wouldn't absolutely need, like all the HP stuff and the stuff I mentioned above.

Some of the items, I don't know what they are, but I guess (?) that I need them...like the three Visual C++ entries. I don't know what that is, but it sounds important. Where do I even go to download that? What happens if I don't have it?

The Intel Matrix Storage manager? I think that has something to do with RAID (my HDs are not set up in RAID, nor do I want them to be). So do I need it? The Java SE runtime environment thing?

Is there anything else I need to consider?

To summarize: Can't I just put the damn Vista disc in and have it install and be done with it? Will Windows Update find whatever I need? It's probably been five years since I installed an operating system, so I don't remember what it was like or what I had to do to get it to work that time. Thanks for your patience!

arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh :help: :D

PS: This is my computer, if that makes any difference:

PPS: I have a follow up question about drivers, but I'll save that for another time because I am so freaking tired. I hope that I have managed to express myself clearly above. Thanks again :D

my bfs new lenovo laptop hat ELEVEN fucking programs loading at startup. another 4-5 x days test versions. how can one botcher a new system that much before ít's user ever started it for the first time?

I guess I'm mostly concerned about the visual C++ entries and Intel Matrix Storage manager...

Once I install Ultimate, there should be nothing on this list...correct? What, if anything, NEEDS to be on it for proper functioning of the system? I'm not talking so much about optional stuff like a browser, etc. Thanks :-)

Can't the 7-Zip archiver also handle the RAR format (with passwords and parts)? If so, that would be one program less.

I don't think that Visual C++ is needed unless someone's a coder.

nah that visual c runtime stuff is also needed for some other software, keep it.

Please allow me to restate my question. I have Home Premium now, and that image that I attached contains what is on the computer now and consists of a combination of stuff preinstalled by HP, and what I installed myself. I am doing a clean installation of Ultimate, so I guess the items in the image will all be gone. I am only concerned about a few of the items that came preinstalled on the computer, and whether I need them or not on my new Vista installation. Namely, visual C and the Intel Matrix Storage Manager.

For example, is the visual C stuff included on the Vista disc, or do I have to download and install it myself? And if so, from where? I see Microsoft has a download page here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?pocId=&freetext=visual%20c%2b%2b%20&DisplayLang=en

So what I have to do is: locate, on this Microsoft page, those three visual C items from the list on the image I attached , and download and install them after I install Ultimate?

*Or* maybe Vista will prompt me to download it if at some point if I try to run something that requires it, so I don't even have to worry about it now?

Perhaps I am overcomplicating this process of installing Ultimate? As I mentioned, it has been a very long time since I installed an OS. I just want to have all my ducks in a row before I go ahead with the installation, so that I can maintain the same excellent level of performance I have come to enjoy and expect on this computer :-)

there is a program that removes crapware. i forgot the name, but if you do a google search, you'll find it.
