It's 2011, and monospace text just doesn't cut it anymore. In the default ANSI color palette, barely any of the possible color combinations are even readable. We can't display graphs, mathematical formulas, tables, etc. We can't use the principles of modern typography to lay out information in a readable, balanced way.

Ugh. I see the screen caps and think "another mac user that needs shit all purdy for them to use it."

I've been using a command prompt since, well, since that's all there was. I don't know how to tell the guy who has been "administering Unix machines for many years now" that if the prompt it isn't pretty enough there's X11.
 
X11 is U-G-L-Y and inconsistant, though. :P

But yeah, rxvt is my personal favorite XTerm and ksh93 is my shell of choice.
 
I haven't tried to use his program. But from what I was looking at screencap wise, it's not like he is needing anything really nice and pretty, just a little more GUI for which I think X11 would be well-suited. Or, hell - remote view gnome or kde ffs! THat's just me, though.

But as for X11 being ugly, I dunno. It's pretty to me in a nostalgic sort of way.
 
I always thought Motif and CED had a nice professional look - and I wasn't even around in the 80's.

Its main problem is inconsistancy. You have Motif, GTK, Qt, FLTK, Xt, Xaw, and a bunch of other toolkits.

Agreed. X is awesome for networking.
 
hmm, this looks interesting. Might check it out since I do a lot of Linux admin work on my Mac. Thanks for posting it.
 
there are already GUIs with command prompts.

to write a GUI for a command prompt only shows that he doesn't understand the concept.
 
IDK, I like the idea of it. I don't think he's saying there's something wrong with using command line the way it is now.
(OK, he is saying that in some parts, but personal opinion etc).
I like the idea of it though. I use command line a lot on my mac for dev work, but I wouldn't hate it if it looked better. Just because something is functional, doesn't mean it can't look nice right? I mean, if I have to stare at it all day, it should be something I actually like staring at.

***Disclaimer: I do use command line, but I <3 my mac's pretty UI a lot more***
