Alternatives to MS-Office AND Open Office

Apparently Open Office is turning into Libre Office. If you try to download the Open Office package on Ubuntu you get Libre. I am very confused.

Libre Office is a fork of Open Office.

Open Office is a trademark of Sun Microsystems, which was acquired by Oracle in 2009. Oracle expressed an intention to take Open Office proprietary after it acquired the rights (OO has been open source for several years). So, all of the open source developers left in 2010 to form The Document Foundation and continue work on an open source version of Open Office, which they called Libre Office (Oracle refused to allow The Document Foundation to use the Open Office name).

Because all of the Open Office developers left to join Libre Office, the Open Office project at Oracle has been shut down. Open Office is now in limbo or dead. The Libre Office fork remains under active development.

It seems that in trying to squeeze more money out of Open Office, Oracle has killed it entirely.

^ Who knows. I think I'll pronounces similar to macabre

^ and that would be correct. french .. "libre" means as much as "free" or "freedom" (to do what you want).

Softmaker is now giving away the 2008 version of their office suite, but it needs to be registered by e-mail. The screenshots show a nice user interface, but it's still outdated :?
