Interesting. I remember when I was a kid back in the 50s, I had some Dutch neighbours. Two different families. I went to school with the children from both families. None of the children could speak Dutch, but they understood it fluently when their parents spoke it.
I was curious if it was a similar situation with you.
I would have been fluent in school. But lack of everyday use, I'm fairly rusty. Theres parts of the country (called Gaeltacht) where only Irish is used and use of english frowned upon. A lot of schoolkids go there in the summer to improve their irish languauge skills. Repeated use of english can lead to a kid being kicked out of the area and sent home.
