Amazon Kindle Fire - New Tablet

This is the first real competitor for the iPad, by the looks of it. Amazon already have great content to sell with the device, and the price is amazing.

The tablet market really needs quality competition to shake it up - hopefully this is it! At $199, I'm tempted to buy one just to have a play.

Despite what everyone says, this isn't an iPad competitor. Even though the hardware is pretty good, its still gimped compared to the iPad and other tablets. You are essentially locked into Amazon's services, which are good, but aren't as extensive as Apple's. (or even Google's) You also do not have access to quite a few of Android's more popular applications.

The best description of the Fire's place in the market is that it is basically carving the market into two segments, with the iPad dominating the top, and the Fire dominating the rest. Its basically a dumb tablet for those that only want to consume content with a limited selection of apps. (Some of the commentaries I've read have said the Fire will cannibalize the Android tablet market not the iPad, but I wouldn't go that far)

Also, it remains to be seen whether the performance will live up to the hype, as well as what Barnes and Noble has in store for the Nook Color 2. (supposedly its specs are very similar to the Fire's)

^ I agree.

The Fire is locked to Amazon's ecosystem much like the iPad to Apple's; I'm sure they'll find some way to jailbreak it (or root it in this case since it's Android).

While it may not have everything the iPad does, you can't compete with the $199 price tag.

7 inch screen, 600x1024 resolution, no bluetooth, no 3G, no GPS, no camera, no micro SD card, no real USB port (only micro USB), no Honeycomb (only Android 2.3).

Amazon refuses to deny reports that it plans to block Hulu, Netflix, other media-streaming sites, and non-Amazon e-book readers. It is likely it will block access to non-Amazon Android markets. It is even more of a proprietary walled garden than Apple has created.

This is no iPad competitor. Just a crippled B & N Nook, at a slightly better price.

Still waiting for someone to challenge Apple with a tablet computer.

Does it block porn sites, video download sites ... etc?
If so, what is the point if you can't access what ever sites you want.

The point is to force you to buy everything from Amazon, so they can get richer and richer.

Just like Apple.

We'll see. There are a lot of compromises with the Fire, and it remains to be seen how that will affect sales.

I have a B&N Nook Color and i love it, I have mine rooted (hacked) to be just like a normal android tablet. i like it for reading, esp on form sites like this its nice. but i still don't use it to much as a tablet. if you want a tablet i think it makes sence to go bigger and get an ipad, or the hp touchpad or anything thats bigger. i see class mates with ipads taking notes and thats just not practical on the these. and also surfing the net isn't to fun. it works and gets the job done. but with like an ipad you can see the whole screen at once. i'm always zooming in and out and panning like crazy. if u want a ereader that you can watch a movie on your check your email then the nook color or this kindle fire is it. but don't think your getting a cheap ipad.

I tried to buy stuff from Amazon but their site is too complicated and hard to buy with shipping confusion ... etc so i only buy stuff from ebay.

This is Amazon we're talking about. They're Kindle's are a huge success selling millions. Hell, I have a Kindle! I think they'll do well.

I'm going to wait for the reviews to start rolling out and then decide whether or not to get it.

Seriously? Amazon is so much easier than eBay, not to mention the shipping is usually faster.

You guys are right, and I stand corrected. I hadn't realised just how restricted this thing is, although the price tag should have given it away.

I take back what I said - no iPad killer. But it may certainly find success in the low-end market.

That's right. Thank god for Android, the not-for-profit socialist phone.

Not socialist - communist.

Because we all know it's the operating system that is evil, not Amazon.

No, i tried three times. It is confusing with the shipping conversion to different currency. At the end i gave up.

Maybe it is easier and faster in the US but not what i experienced in Aust. trying amazon site.
Ebay is easier for me.

I think this new tablet of Amazon's will surely give Apple a scare, because Amazon has a lot of content when it comes to movies, music and especially books. Plus they have some apps now. I am sure they'll get things right and will only improve. It adds some healthy competition. ^.^

This is an iPad competitor, because many people will buy this instead of the iPad.

I prefer Android, as I have an ASUS Transformer. I think this Amazon Fire would be a great tablet for my mum, whereas the iPad would be a great tablet for my brother.

Not really. This caters to a completely different market. This is a dumb-tablet for people that don't need all of the features of the iPad. Its missing a significant number of features that the iPad and other Android tablets have, and won't be cross-shopped with them.

Better competitors than Amazon and the Fire have tried, and all have failed. It would take a lot to scare Apple, and a gimped 7 inch tablet isn't going to do it.

I don't know, I think this Amazon tablet might be more popular and succeeded more than those other ones. It won't beat the iPad, but it'll be a strong competitor.
