America... what do you think?

I enjoy the US, don't get me wrong.

But I have been so let down by it over the past many many years.

And yes, were I able to do it, there are three countries in which I'd enjoy spending the remainder of my life.

The US is a very large country with something like 300 million citizens. Because of this... oh, nevermind.

Americans
What do you like/dislike about this country? Would you consider yourself patriotic? Would you consider moving to another country? If not what keeps you here?

I'm not sure which one to answer, considering I have dual citizenship.

I guess I will answer the second part since I live in the US.

I like that it is easy for me to get good vegetarian food. I live a pretty high quality of life. I have been able to build my own business. One of my favorite things about this country is its diversity.

I am not patriotic. I did not create this country. I do not take pride on something that I had nothing to do with. However, I do feel fortunate that I do live here.

I would consider living in another country later in life, but right now would not be practical for me. My family, friends, business, and home are here. I have been told that running a business in the US is easier than running a business in many other countries.

There are many things that I do not like. One of the main problems is that we are too short sighted in our thinking. It results in a lot of problems in this country. For example, our businesses are focused on maximizing short term profits. Our government feared a backlash from its citizens in planning for future energy goals. Our health care system is collapsing in many areas, yet it is the most costly in the World. Corporations have too much influence in our governement. The religious right has too much influence in our government. I wish that our president had to allow the government question his/her actions on public tv on a regular basis just as the Prime Minister of England must endure that. I wish that the American people would question their assumptions that have been banged into their heads over and over...such as their belief that capitalism is the only system that works and that the government can do no right. It would have been much harder for Bush to get away with what he has gotten away with. We are also too wasteful. And ther are so many others....

What is your perception of America? I ask because here "America is the best country in the world and if you challenege it in any way YOU ARE A TERRORIST!!" crazy huh? Here we are bombared with images on how great America is and how EVERYONE wants to come here because apparently the U.S. is the only place for opportunity. I would like to here from someone outside the U.S. and get their prospective, the good, the bad, and the inbetween.

Do Americans really believe that everyone wants to come and live in the USA

i have never felt so pessimistic about the future of this country as i have during the last seven and half years of our current so called leadership.

we have lost all sense of vision and what our role or place is in this world.

unless the American people wake up as a whole nation i think there is every chance that this country will be a declining civilization in the coming years.

we face so many serious problems in this country and we are refusing to deal with them. we have become to polarized with our political leadership. it is always and us vs them attitude instead of a "we" attitude.

our government has not given us positive leadership for too long a period of time - even beyond the last seven and a half years of the current administration.

we are getting by as Thorton Wilder wrote, by "The Skin of Our Teeth"

our attitudes about money and business and their roles in our society need to be re-examined and controls need to be placed on them as they affect our governement and our well being.

he may not have been perfect, but we need another JFK leading us. he understood what this country was all about and where it needed to be heading - internally and externally.

please what ever happens, do not give John Mc Cain the role of leadership in this country. were that to happen i no longer see a future for this country.

just the random thoughts of the local village idiot. but then again what do i know?](*,)](*,)

As a non American:

What is your perception of America? The cartoon version is that you all go around with guns whilst stuffing your faces with hamburgers, hero worshipping pointless celebrities whilst retaining an ever increasing puritanical 40's moral value structure.

I don't agree that everyone wants to go there though. Even though it is a great place to be for opportunity, there's plenty of opportunities throughout the world to enjoy too. A lot of the people I know would never even entertain the idea of travelling to the states because of the fear of getting shot. I personally think they're a bit deluded because guns are everywhere but the fact is, America stands up for it's right to own guns and that's why a lot of people have that fear.

I would argue that America is less tolerant of the minorities of our society also. It doesn't seem like a very gay friendly place to be (unless you live in SF or NYC). As a non American i'm often amazed at some of the views of my American Friends in regards to certain issues. Like I mentioned before, it's almost as if American society has gone back a few decades in terms of moral values. Becoming more and more puritanical and dare I say it, right winged in it's views.
