American cops: shoot first, even in a toy store....

It's the NRA mentality these days that guns and violence are the answer.

You could spend a complete NRA convention and never hear such a thing.

I'm not disparaging the second amendment...it's the let's arm everyone and shoot 'em up thought pattern that seems to be so pervasive in the country. Meet violence with greater violence. It's indicative of an extremist disease infecting the country and world. It's infected our politics, our public officials and our society. The police wield power not serve the people and the people retaliate with anger and violence. Violence gets attention from the media and that provokes more violence. It's an evil cycle of self destruction.

"Put down your weapons. Those who live by sword, die by sword".

That's tolerated these days in the NRA because it makes money, and Wayne La Pierre is all about money. But the members don't really run the NRA any more, the PR firm La Pierre hired does.

On the other hand, if by "local militia" you mean state run National Guard units, I'm OK with that. There are a few scenarios where this equipment being deployed on the streets might be helpful, like if we're under an attack of some kind.

Not quite the National Guard, though they could be called by a state's governor under the same authority, as well as called up by a municipal head of government as well.

I often wonder how many NRA members and "militia" types would change their minds if that were done....

A drunk redneck when called up by the Governor's office, is still a drunk redneck.

And when called up, can get ten years behind bars for being drunk, because at that point he's under military discipline.

There are times when I'd like to put all the rednecks under military discipline -- I doubt that most of the ones I know would cut it..

One of the two officers involved in the killing is back on the job

http://www.whio.com/news/news/crime-law/family-appalled-officer-walmart-shooting-back-job/ng6zW/

The Beavercreek law director announced Wednesday that Sgt. David M. Darkow was back on the job. He is one of two officers involved in the Aug. 5 fatal Walmart shooting of 22-year-old John Crawford III of Fairfield. The other officer, Sean Williams, remains on administrative leave, according to city attorney Stephen McHugh.

Why are police shooting to kill no matter the situation?

There's an us vs them mentality that's more often than not encouraged in groups by the group members that deal with dangerous situations. Unlike, say, firefighters, whose 'enemy' is, well, Shit On Fire (which is why hazing occurs, to weed out/cement people in a group), cops' 'enemy'/'them' happens to be civilians as it's the civilians that commit the bulk of the crimes that get prosecuted. Therefor everyone is a suspect and in the US's culture these days, it's shoot first and ask questions later.

Also, Racism.

Yeah, and you could attend every GOP convention in America for a decade without ever hearing any discussion that the party is racist, too.

The laws in most states make it almost impossible to convict a police officer of murder for actions performed on the job.

Not if the national convention is anything like the local shindig -- it doesn't take long to racist phrases and statements.

So if you like shooting people, become a cop!

You're second point is exactly why your plan would be disastrous. I've known rednecks all my life too. Giving them military equipment would be an epic fail.

Black Panther group invoke right to bear arms openly in Dallas. The b(l)acklash has begun...

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/0...-gun-club-invokes-right-to-open-carry-images/

In Texas blacks are protesting police violence by showing us their trigger fingers. More than 30 members have formed the Huey P. Newton Gun Club. Dressed in black, faces solemn, they “march through South Dallas with rifles, shotguns and AR-15s. People on the sidewalks are wary and stop to watch them.

Beacuse America is so stupid it refuses to curb the right to bear arms. Therefore every dickhead has to be assumed to be armed and the Police have to assume they are being threatened with a live weapon

Yes, basically. It's an insane, dangerous, national delusion. But it feeds on itself, and of course lobbyists don't help.

In June Alan Grayson, a liberal Democrat from Florida, sponsored an amendment that would have forbidden the Defence Department from transferring to local police "aircraft (including unmanned aerial vehicles), armoured vehicles, grenade launchers, silencers, toxicological agents (including chemical agents, biological agents, and associated equipment), launch vehicles, guided missiles, ballistic missiles, rockets, torpedoes, bombs, mines, or nuclear weapons." It failed: not a single House leader of either party voted for it. America's defence industry donates millions of dollars to politicians, and spends even more on lobbyists. Those who opposed Mr Grayson's bill received, on average, 73% more in defence-industry donations than those who voted for it. - See more at: http://www.economist.com/blogs/economist-explains/2014/08/economist-explains-11
