American Idol: Season 10

I do find the delusion at VFTW amazing. They actually think they had influence in last night's finale.

Pick the one many of us could have picked as a winner, who DialIdol has had in a comfortable lead for 11 weeks (behind Lauren Alaina only once, and still comfortably safe - 12 weeks with a comfortable lead if you count finale - there were only 13 weeks of voting), and call it a victory when he wins?

I guess if it makes you feel better. Perhaps they have convinced themselves Scotty didn't have a good chance of winning?
 
I just hated the final 2 so much, I couldnt bring myself to even watch the finale. For those brave souls that did watch, what did Stefano do?

he was really only shown like twice...during the group performance of "Born This Way" he was in the front of the guy group gyrating a bit....then he was in a pre-taped segment with Casey and James and Pia about who should win "Most Shocking Elimination" which was actually kind of funny.

Oh, cool, I would have been so disappointed if I didn't see at least one post from you bitching about VFTW after the finale. Hey, here's an idea, why don't you take the advice that you gave Sgt Pepper when it comes to Lauren Alaina's performances? If you don't like VFTW, stop going there and talking about them all the time! Especially since complaining about how delusional you think VFTW is just makes them happier.

I don't blame you boo. I only watched in and out, and I was on the phone with a friend, but I heard Stefano take the lead during one of the group performances and he looked/sounded adorable.

You're funny. Like them. I go over there to laugh, which is why I called it amusing.

I'd hardly call that bitching. What Sgt Pepper did was bitching.

For the record, I don't find the insults annoying. Those both VFTW and Sgt Pepper could do without. But the show has ended, time to move on. Perhaps by next year, assuming any of us care, the insults can be toned down.

Ill have to youtube. I actually Rachel Ray a few days ago because TSefano n Pia were on. Can you imagine having to stomach Rachel Ray? Thank god for DVR.
 
If you missed The Queen's awesome performance, here it is again. Beyonce showed up to prove that Scotty and Lauren are soulless honky tonks (and to remind J Lo who really runs this shit). Sing it B!

My original post was made from a statistical standpoint. With the 2011 winner being another white guy, let's look back:

-Scotty McCreery is the 4th consecutive white guy to win AI
-Only 2 girls have made it to the last 4 AI finals, both losing to a guy
-Of the last 4 AI finals, 2008 and 2009 were guy vs. guy
-The only time there was a girl vs. girl AI final was in 2004
-The last girl and minority to win was Jordin Sparks in 2007
-The only minority guy to win was Ruben Studdard in 2003
-The last minority to make the final was Jordin Sparks in 2007
(there's more but that's the crux)

The issue isn't sexism or racism. It's about sensibilities and the frequent voters are CLEARLY male-centric. Nothing wrong with it but these stats back up my opinion that girls and minorities have very little chance of winning AI. They will have to be exceptional and some pimpage from the judges wouldn't hurt.
 
^^ Not only that but the minority stats you mentioned -- Jordin being the last one to make the finals -- are significant because that was when power-texting became a factor. Ever since teen girls have had the ability to inflate vote totals via power-texting we've had ALL WHITE finales and ALL MALE winners.

And that is something to note.
 
But Scotty is 25% Puerto Rican!1!1!! Not that anybody would be able to tell just from looking at him.

Though, more seriously, David Archuleta wasn't completely white either, and unlike Scotty, you could actually tell that he has some non-Caucasian heritage in him from his Honduran mother.

Something about this song is so... off.

It's like, it doesn't go anywhere. She's diversifying for the first time since her first album, so i'm happy(okay, don't kill me, she did some ballads on the 3rd, i'm aware of that Beysus worshipers)... but... it doesn't bring me there.

Oh, and a country singer won. Cute.
 
I love you slipintothefog, but those people are white enough to "pass" which makes them more palatable to a white audience. It's a distinction between identity and appearance. Hell Scotty fucking McCreery looks whiter than some people who are 100% WASPS!

Notice too that Melinda Doolittle was passed over while the younger lighter-skinned Jordin made the cut. I'm not saying it's a black and white (pun fully intended) case of racism, but more the kind of socialized racism that informs standard notions of beauty that affects most of America today.

White teenage girls are mostly attracted to white teenage boys because that's the conventional standard of beauty. And we know those girls vote for who they're attracted to. The fact that Scotty or David may have something other than white in their background is neither here nor there for a majority of fans who still read their physical appearance as "white", and therefore within the dominant culture's safe code of beauty.

Darren Criss is attractive (to me) for example, but I would never say he represents an ethnic notion of beauty simply because his mother is a Filipino immigrant. On the outside, he just looks white.
 
Well, I personally could tell that Archie was something besides white, but yeah, I totally agree with you about Scotty looking completely white. And also Darren after Googling him. ;)

In the case of Jordin and Melinda, I would argue that Jordin went farther because she was younger, and the tween girls could identify more with her due to her closer age. Of the few girls who have done well in recent seasons, most of them (Lauren, Allison, Siobhan, Haley, Jordin) were closer to the age of that fanbase than Melinda, who was pushing thirty during her season and didn't do as many current songs.
 
I just saw an interesting report about what underage contestants earn from their contracts, since minors need their contracts court-approved and therefore they become public record.

Jordin Sparks - $360,000
David Archuleta - $360,000
Scotty McCreery - $250,000 (plus licensing)
Lauren Alaina - $87,500, doubles if she records an album.

I wish I could mock Lauren for making so much less than the other three, but she's making approximately $87,500 (and really double that because EVERY Idol runner-up has recorded an album so far) more than I am right now... so, hey, enjoy the cheesecake, Lauren.
 
I don't watch the show, but I saw a clip online of Judas Priest's performance. That made my heavy metal fan heart both swell with pride that millions got to see The Metal God and weep that Judas Priest will likely get more out of this one performance than most anything they've ever done before.

Yup. She'll eat right through that money. Lauren probably doesn't even know what she makes. I'm not even sure she knows how to read.
