American Idol: Season 10

Re: Ellen DeGeneres is the new 'Idol' judge!

Now they should get that idiot Kara to resign!!!!!

Re: Ellen DeGeneres is the new 'Idol' judge!

Now they should get that idiot Kara to resign!!!!!

There is talk about not renewing Tara's contract. I think that they will completely replace the panel with the exception of Randy. I don't think that I will watch next year...maybe :)

Re: Ellen DeGeneres is the new 'Idol' judge!

in all honesty....they should have kept Kara and gotten rid of Randy....at least Kara improved this season from her first one...Randy hasn't been good in 9 seasons...he sucks and is a freakin' moron.

so it's looking like the new panel will be Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson..........oy

Re: Ellen DeGeneres is the new 'Idol' judge!

If they really do get rid of Kara then I will most definitely continue to watch next year --- She couldn't have been more condescending than she was this year offering absolutely no substantative advice other than "We don't know who you are" --- Talk about a moron!!!!!

Re: Ellen DeGeneres is the new 'Idol' judge!

Ellen was smart to agree to a 1yr Multi-Million dollar deal then bow out...They need to Keep Randy and revamp the rest of the panel...

Re: New American Idol Judges Announced

and it's official:

Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez

Re: New American Idol Judges Announced

hmmm..interesting trio.

I like her personally...but does anyone find it funny that Jennifer Lopez will be dishing out advice about how one should sing?

I think she'll be great for sharing knowledge of being in the industry and such...but I would find it totally laughable if she starts trying to tell people how they should sing. She's not so strong in that department herself, imo.

I find it no more funny than Paula Abdul telling people how to sing

Re: New American Idol Judges Announced

I think Paula was there more as a performance judge instead of a vocal judge. Randy and Simon focused more on vocals.

I don't like these two as judges. They should have kept Kara and had that guy from Canada (I'm getting a blank on his name...he judged that choir show with Nicole from PCD) as judges.

Re: New American Idol Judges Announced

LOL. JLo and Tyler? Sure, Abdul was/is a has-been, but this shit takes the cake.

American Idol will be irrelevant when Cowell brings The X-Factor to the US next year anyway.

Hopefully this will be the final season of the show since it has only produced 2 "American Idols" out of the 9 seasons.

Singers, yeah...but it also produced an Academy Award-winning actress. So, it's at least 3/9.

Re: New American Idol Judges Announced

^ Sorry. But blah, JLo? Her last hit was...I think I was ten or some shit. I totally forgot she was even a singer until this news came up. And Tyler? Is anyone born after 1985 even going to know who he is? Sweet Jesus this is a fucking mess.

I truly believe that only Madonna or Mariah Carey could save this show.

And the news of Cheryl Cole on the American X-Factor is even more disastrous - a) I doubt many Americans will even be able to understand her with that accent b) she's like Kylie Minogue - no one knows who the fuck she even is in North America.

Re: New American Idol Judges Announced

More details of the season were announced during a press conference after the announcement.

Taken from http://musicistheheartofoursoul.toxicstrut.net/
There was a press conference with newly-announced judges, Randy Jackson,Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and new in-house mentor, Universal Music Group’s, Jimmy Iovine earlier today.

Also there were producers Nigel Lythgoe, Ken Warwick, and Fox chief Mike Darnell during the Press Conference earlier today. Here are some snippets about the changes coming to the new season when it premieres in January during the Press Conference earlier today.

Contestants will get to perform in their own genres every week! No more county singers singing rock and vice versa. Themes will focus on decades rather than genres. “It’s really important to develop what they are good at,” says Nigel.

There will be big changes that seem very X-Factor like. Jimmy Iovine, from Interscope/UMG will mentor the kids every week. Big producers like Timbaland will be brought in to coach the kids. It’ll be the best of the best.

There will be NO guest mentors. Jimmy Iovine will be the “resident in-house” mentor and will work with the kids every week. They laughed at the idea of Miley Cyrus as mentor

The kids will be pushed to improve, to become, “better and more interesting” than in past seasons, “developing the young artists the way they would anyone who signs with the label.”

It’s possible there will be guest judges if appropriate. Nigel says they would not turn down an Elton John.

The middle rounds are going to be re-vamped. Didn’t go into a lot of detail about how.

There could be changes regarding the use of instruments. Ken spent some time dissing the guitar players. He felt some of them hide behind their instruments. Nigel says there will be no “shoe gazers”. They want contestants to move.

Nigel says after Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, there were no Idols. “We have got to go back to creating American Idols,” he says.
Backstories aren’t going away any time soon. “We’ve still got to get to know these kids,” says Nigel.

Nigel wants to bring the focus back to the talent, rather than making decisions based on the ratings.

Nobody is there to replace Simon Cowell. Each judge will play themselves, just as Simon did. Every judge will dole out tough critiques when necessary.
Jennifer says she believes in “tough love” but could never be cruel. Sounds like she’ll play the Paula role.

Hard to tell what role Steven is going to play. He’s inarticulate. He’s moving to Los Angeles. (He lives in Boston).

Steven tried to put a positive spin on it, but it’s obvious his Aerosmith bandmates are pissed. He says when they first heard the news they were jealous and angry that they heard it through the media.

Jlo unfazed by rumors in the run-up to the announcement. She’s used to bad press. She says the truth is always revealed.

Jennifer has a 1st look deal with FOX . She’ll develop film and television projects.

Fox brass insists the negotiations with both went really smoothly.

Re: New American Idol Judges Announced

I would certainly include Chris Daughtry in the "idol" category although he was fourth runner-up on the show.

'American Idol': The singers 'are now going to stay within their genre'

Face it: While Jimmy Iovine as the new in-house"American Idol "mentor is news, learning that Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are joining Randy Jackson at the judges tables was pretty anticlimactic.

Good thing returning producerNigel Lythgoe has a couple of other tricks up his sleeve, including that the singers are no longer going to be made to sing all different genres.

Changes to the format:

Nigel Lythgoe "They are now going to stay with their genre, consequently the styles of music are going to be more decades rather than individual artist's music. I think that is important to develop what they are good at."

Nigel Lythgoe(cont.): "We've been a bit of a karaoke show purely because we redo songs that people already know. We've got a whole new set of rules that are going to come in, we're not just going to copy the tracks that have been there before."

Jimmy Iovine "We're going to try every week to bring the artist along. We're looking for originality. We're not looking for someone who sings like Whitney Houston. We're looking for someone who's influenced by Whitney Houston, but brings their own stuff ... Every week, they can't just be told 'sing better.' Someone has to work with them every week on performance, on style. I think you're going to see great improvement every week on the show."

Lythgoe "What this does, Season 10, with having these icons here, is we're no longer protecting a brand. Once something works, you don't mess around with it too much. We're now given the opportunity of recreating the magic we started with. I think those middle rounds, we're looking at finding other ways of doing that so we actually present to America the best singers.

On who is the heir to Simon as the toughest judge:

Randy Jackson "I don't know if there will be. I think we will all have our moments of toughness and nurturing and sweetness and everything."

Nigel Lythgoe "It isn't about role-playing, it's about being yourself. We're hoping everyone's going to be honest and remain in their characters."

Jennifer Lopez "I will give them tough love, but I don't think I will ever, as an artist, I could never be cruel to another artist. I think there's definitely better ways to say things and still get your point across. I've mentored on the show before, I think people have seen that and kind of can feel how I'll be."

On the process of becoming a judge:

Steven Tyler "It's a bit of a dream come true. I was on tour and this was thrown at me and I looked on it as a great opportunity and then when I found out who was on board, I threw down right away. Right away. And as far as tough love and loving people and we're going to for sure be sending some people home with broken hearts, but with all we've been through in our careers, we live vicariously through the young talent out there. It's going to be hard, but it's also going to be fun. They're stepping up to the plate and so are we."

On the rumors of "diva demands":

Jennifer Lopez "I'm kind of used to it, after as many years as I've been in this business, I'm used to that kind of stuff. I'm used to speculation. I was calming the FOX people down, I was like, 'It'll be gone tomorrow.' The truth always shows itself in who you are, so I wasn't really worried about it, to be honest. I was just looking forward to getting started."

Watch our video clip below of the press conference, the new judges talk about their chemistry as a panel.

After spending 10 minutes searching this forum and others with various combinations of words, can I really be the first to start an official thread for American Idol's season 10? :) It begins airing January 19th.

Who here'll be following it this year? Religiously? Never, can't stand it? Occasionally if channel surfing or home at the time?

The latest issue of "EW" that I picked up today has a cover piece with an interview and sidebar highlighting some of the changes this year.

And already the leak/spoiler sites are showing some potentially interesting contestants. SPOILERS AT LINK ALERT! Here's a link showing some of the contestants. Avoid it if you want to remain surprised!

I'm excited. I can't wait to see how some of the changes will work. I like some of them but others appear to be really annoying.

I am just glad to see J Lo back on television. I hope she works out as a good judge.

Plus, I am glad it is back down to only 3 judges to decide the Final 24 before America cast them off one by one.

I'll watch the auditions (usually do)...but I feel this is the beginning of the end of American Idol. Once The X Factor US launches and Simon comes around again I don't predict AI to last.

I'm not going to be watching it. Without Simon, and Paula, and with the changes the producers are making to make it more like other reality shows ("lets watch them all live in a house and backstab eachother"), it has lost it's charm.
