American Idol: Season 10

I'll put it on the PVR schedule for now. Losing Kara is good, staying with 3 judges is good. I miss Ellen there. Time will tell how JLo works out.

I hope it's fun this year, unlike the the last 2 seasons.

**Official American Idol Season 10 Discussion

The first episode premiered tonight. What are your thoughts on the new judges?

I actually think Steven Tyler makes the show a lot more fun to watch. Jennifer Lopez completely lacks a spine when it comes to critiquing someone, but she doesn't ramble incoherently like Paula Abdul, and she doesn't give stupid " I want you to sing it exactly the way I want you to" advice like Kara Dioguardi did. Randy has a lot more to say this year than the word "pitchy", so that's a plus.

It's still early, so I can't tell whether the talent is going to be good or not this year. One thing that irks me is that they have a LOT of little 16 year old kids now. I guess the producers are looking for a teen idol this year.

Thoughts?

I have to agree. Steven Tyler was a GREAT addition as a judge. I really didn't think he would be for some reason but after watching it, I have pretty high hopes for him as a judge.

I expected Jennifer to have issues "crushing dreams" but as the show goes on I think that it will become easier to say no.

The first episode was kind of just okay.

They did do something that drives me nuts. There were several mentions that some singers would be better suited for Broadway music than pop music.

In most of world, Broadway type music IS considered pop music.

That's because they had old-fashioned stage voices and/or were singing showtunes. Duh. :p

AMERICAN Idol.

AMERICAN Idol.

They have to do what's marketable here, to us.

Here's a neat article from Pop Confidential that really highlights what was good/bad about the premiere. I think they're correct about the new judging panel too.

1) I completely disagree with that site, and think Robbie Rosen and Melinda Ademi are far, far better singers than Travis Orlando and were probably the only decent auditions on last night's show; they actually put real emotion into their singing, and Rosen has music theory experience that allows him to really work with the arrangement of a song, and to use much better notes.

2) I fail to see how Steven or Jennifer could be a "Randy"; In just the first audition aired, Steven Tyler was drumming on the desk and making the audition FUN. No other judge has ever done that. He was also flirting with the Italian girl with tattoos, making fun of the kid with the bad haircut and glasses and asking another if he ate paintchips as a child. Randy would NEVER do that.

Jennifer is sort of like The Paula, in that she just tries to be really nice and doesn't really know how to say "No" yet, but if her and Steven care like "Three Randys" because they're all trying to offer practical advice and criticism, then okay.

In my opinion, Steven Tyler makes up for the loss of Simon, who only got ratings for being a jerk, anyways. It got old seeing people burst into happy tears because OMG SIMON SAID SOMETHING NOT MEAN TO ME!!. He's the only reason I give a shit about this season, and I think a lot of people will agree. Steven has shown he's capable of roasting the bad auditions, too. I think he's better at it than Simon was, because he makes it funny rather than just outright rude.

It's still too early to tell, though. So far, I just got a really good impression from Steven because he knows how to be entertaining, and doesn't take himself or the show too seriously. They were letting in ALL the wrong people last season, so maybe it won't be THAT bad. Who knows.

^^ Wow we saw things totally differently. I was OK with J Lo but I found Steven really annoying. And Randy of course will always be the worst judge of all time.

I actually liked JLo which I wasn't expecting to say.

And in the all important ratings:
American Idol 26.1 million
Live to Dance 5.3 million

Sure Idol is down a little from last season, but it's the most watched non-sports show of the week.

"They have to do what's marketable here, to us."

That was kind of my point. Marketing is everything, if they wanted you believe Broadway music was pop music, they could market it that way and everyone would believe it.

Yeah, I was pretty impressed with Steven as a judge as well - in interviews (in connection with Aerosmith) I've seen, he likes to play up the rogue, substance-recovering, leering (after girls younger than his own daughter) rock star angle, so I wasn't sure how he'd do on the show. But I thought he was a pretty mature presence - often giving quite helpful/intelligent advice, sensitive when he needed to be (on the contestants that were genuinely giving their all and didn't realize they were bad), harsher when he needed to be, and checking the ego a bit to more modestly work as part of the judging trio. I'll be curious to see how he does in the live shows!

He is who he is. The "Yo yo yoyoyoyoyo dawg yo dawg dawg" thing can get kind of annoying sometimes, but I don't feel strongly about him either way.

I've also noticed he's eaten a few Nestle Crunch bars between now and last season.

I almost mistaken Steven Tyler for a recovering female addict, J Lo is channeling her inner Angelina, and Randy and Ryan are being Randy and Ryan. I long ago stop caring for Idol after they took my Paula from me. Bring back Paula and Simon and I'll watch Idol again. Until then FUCK OFF!

*shudders*
Put that away before you scare me straight!

Seriously, though, I'm not going to watch season 10 of American Idol because of Steven Tyler's face.

I thought Steven Tyler was excellent, very entertaining , loved J.L
The whole show has sparked my interest again.
My grips are all the 16year olds and the sob stories, jez talk about the sympathy vote.

Love Jlo and Steven. Fun to watch. I think they are not showing to many rejects because it has backfired on them in the past. The rejects get on tv and become big headed because of the exposure. Some have tried to take the spotlight away from the show and some have even sued. I do think they have too many sad stories but it is what it is. Overall I like the new format of the show.

I'm enjoying the new panel...I think if this season does good....they get rid of Randy next year with another new judge and it could be really great again.
