Americans are fat (still)

If people are truly happy being that way, more power to them. But im not buying it. Not with all the skinny/anorexia/bulimia jokes i put up with from fat people (not to mention the dirty looks...). They obviously have self esteem issues if they feel the need to comment on my weight.

I'm not trying to bash anyone that has a few extra lbs. on them, be it 5, 10, 15 or even 20 lbs. But honestly, anything beyond that is completely out of hand. The person needs help. Much less when someone is either obese or morbidly obese!

My sister is obese and really not helping herself. She wakes up at 11, has TWO lunches, snacks in the afternoon, a hugeass dinner, and a bag of chips to herself after dinner. I can't handle sunday dinners anymore, her table manners, omg, watching her shove the food in her mouth and talking with her mouth full, its so disgusting. She must be gaining ten pounds a month. I just can't stand to be around her.

When I travel in America, I am somewhat amazed at the extent to which food is just piled on in restaurant meals, and also the extent to which parents order fatty food for already overweight kids. I like to eat what I like too, but in America it does seem to be more of an indulging in largesse for its own sake.

Incidentally, it's not America bashing to acknowledge aspects like this. Other countries can look at their problems without taking it as an attack on patriotism - indeed, facing your problems and tackling them is more patriotic than off-handed denial.

Oh and thank god you didnt join in on the bashing. Good thing everyone is so slim and trim in canada huh? ..|

Well, I'm not on that list! In fact, I'm probably the reason we're at 34% and not 35%

I'm underweight. =/. I eat nonstop, but somehow I never gain a freaken pound!

^
That is an age/metabolism thing....as you age...your metabolism will slow down. I used to have trouble gaining weight, and I will admit that the way that I gained it was not healthy....lots of eggs and ice cream shakes.

If you do bulk up, start to taper off by eating healthier foods.

I'm 44 and I have not really had very much weight issue because I eat a really healthy vegetarian diet and workout on a regular basis...well...this year...I do admit that every time I have weighed myself...my weight has dropped a little more...not worried about it yet...but I don't want to lose any more.

I agree, but us Brits are catching up fast!

The UK is catching up fast - but it's more noticeable in the cities rather than smaller towns and villages. In fact several of my friends remarked at the beginning of summer that they'd never seen so many acres of flesh on display as they had this year. Of course winter will also see lycra tested to it's limits as those acres are shoe-horned into leggings and tops.

On the positive side however, is the fact that the mortality rate will increase among the under 50's and so this should offset the pension shortfall for this and the younger generation! :)

It is denial. America is #1! Anything other than moronic platitudes send many into a tailspin. I was watching the news the other night and they mentioned that the US education system has now fallen to 24th in Math, 17th in Science, and 10th in reading/literacy. But the students ranked #1 in confidence. That struck me as ironically funny.

I apologize if I struck a nerve loki81
I was just agreeing with what Molten rock III said thats all
Why didn't you direct your comment towards him?
Anorexia is an illness/disorder and not a goal
More to the topic; eating one's way to morbid obesity isn't a goal either
For the last 14 years I've worked for one of the largest hospital systems in S.C.
I know what poor eating habits coupled with a lack of excercise can do to peoples health (34% obesity nation wide seems like an epedimic to me !!)
I choose not to be a part of that percentage.

I may be wrong, but I get the feeling that your comment is related to a previous post of mine

Don't worry he hates me too. *meh* WC.

One thing I've always found odd, is that like 1/3 or 1/2 of the female nurses in southern US hospitals / clinics are HUGE usually.

Although, I met my current boyfriend who's a nurse at the Mayo Clinic in MN, and he works with some damn hotties in his dept. At the Mayo, I haven't noticed hardly anyone overweight.

she's a model who, in the early/mid 90's, was one of the main faces of the heroic chic trend that featured anorexic-looking models.

You're still on that phone huh? :##:

That's heroin chic, for the curious. She was also anorexic and addicted to cocaine. :)

Interesting comment. I think nationalism has become a religion in America, the religion really, but not an introspective thoughtful religion, but a dogmatic one.

^ North America is junk food and soft drink obsessed.

Just watch the shoppers in grocery store checkouts. As far as I'm concerned, gift cards from Salvation Army shouldn't be permitted to purchase 4 x 2 litre bottles of Coke and family-sized bags of potato chips.

Just as you can spot a German tourist a mile away in any country, an American is equally easy to spot, albeit for completely different reasons. Their size stands out 1/4 mile away, literally.

old thread, but i am curious ... is it because of the sandals + socks thing :D ?

btw i am a bit shocked because of germany's position in the list..

I've been Obese, and sadly I still feel as if I am...I think I kinda feel worse now than I did when I was fat, cause I seem to be stuck in a skinny, yet chubby body shape, and although I've gained confidence. Guys out there really are mean if you're just a few pounds overweight :(
