What would you think about someone who says "In my country, when we take people to dinner.... we ask them what they would like to drink and offer them a seat instead of sitting down in front of them....lol" instead of "thanks for dinner" after you took them out to a very nice dinner?

Am I the only one who thinks that this is just beyond obnoxious? What would you say to someone like this??

Why do I think that this is very obnoxious? How do you explain to someone who's very thick and just doesn't get it that this 'observation' is an obnoxious behavior?

I'm just a bit dumbfounded at the moment.

And the other thing. The racist subtext. I live in Australia, and have been living here for almost 12 years. He was pretty much born and raised here.

I mean he seriously thinks it's okay to say "In my country" to someone who has lived here for almost 12 years and is pretty much a citizen as if he's a recent immigrant who needs to be educated about Australian manners and its way of life.
 
He was born there, where you only lived there for 12 years. So, he thinks he knows more about more manners than you. Like you said, he is very thick. It's just how some people are.

The correct thing to do would be to jump up from your seat and apologize for your absentmindedness. Ask him to sit and once he's comfortably settled in, you just walk away.

Really depends where in France. The french will only be nice to you if you are nice to them.

Now, the germans will definitely say something about you, they are more direct so they will say whatever is on their mind.
 
IMO - what he's asking for is a very antiquated show of respect to a FEMALE a guy has taken out on a date.

How old is this guy??? And does he really want you to treat him like a woman?

If he's that stodgy on "Mrs. Manners", You're probably dealing with a "Princess" and better off without him.

You wanted to date a foreigner...well, there's your foreigner, up close and personal. Now it depends on whether or not you can deal with it long term or not? I'm not one to bicker in a public place because it seems so trashy, which is really what your date's attitude was. I might have just replied with, "well, here in (insert country) it's not a big deal anymore. We have more important things to do see who has the best table manners."
