an unarmed elderly black citizen who was shot to death

^ Yeah, this is a very nasty and brutal story. If all the facts check out as it is being reported, this is actually worse than the Trayvon Martin murder as it involves police breaking into an old, veteran's home and killing him.

Here's a full article to the story along with the 40+ minute interview. It's very compelling. The difference about this story is that the box was recording everything happening here.

Even if an old man was holding a knife, the official report from the police department is troubling. Why would they taser a man with a heart/lung condition that you just responded to as a medical call? Also, under no circumstances should a police officer call a black citizen a nigger. There's also a difference of engagement between shooting an individual in their own private residence. There's just a lot of really bad facts that do not add up in defense of these police officers.

The family attorney also cautioned that all information presented to the Grand Jury is at the mercy of the District Attorney. They don't even know if the jury will be given the audio tape or if that the tape itself will be edited. The attorneys are not allowed to address the Grand Jury in NY.

Again, whatever you take from this, just watch the video. It's heartbreaking to watch the son break down in tears. His father was a hero to him, and it's a damn shame this was done to his family.

Sorry, that's my error. In an attempt to keep certain posters from going off the wall about the link, I have been trying to not cite it.
It appears that Juan Gonzalez at Democracy Now! wrote an article and Amy Goodman wrote this one with interview with Juan. Amy came up with the brutality part.
Now I remember why I posted it. It was a petition and it appears the only description of the event is written by the son. I'm going to see if I can find something else about it.

Cop in Fatal Shooting of Ex-Marine Kenneth Chamberlain Was Sued in 2008 Racism Case
The alleged shooter, Officer Anthony Carelli, is due in court later this month on an unrelated 2008 police brutality case.

April 5, 2012 |

The following is a transcript of a Democracy Now! program revealing the identity and violent history of the officer who allegedly killed an African-American retired Marine.

--snip--

The alleged shooter, Officer Anthony Carelli, is due in court later this month in an unrelated 2008 police brutality case. He is accused of being the most brutal of a group of officers who allegedly beat two arrestees of Jordanian descent and called them "rag heads." We speak to Gus Dimopoulos, attorney for Jerry and Sal Hatter. "We allege that the police officers, while in the custody of the White Plains Police Department back at the station, you know, severely beat Jerry while being restrained by handcuffs. They hit him in the face with a nightstick, they kicked, they punched, they punched him, and then essentially charged him with a crime," Dimopoulos said.

I see Just_Believe18 did the work for me thanks!
I will follow this and see when the recordings will be released and file then.

The interview at this link is 58 minutes long and very heartbreaking. The police would not leave him alone. There are other witnesses here and explain what is going on.
The cop that was named as the killer, Anthony Carelli, is appearing later this month for the brutality charge, the Killing hasn't been heard by the grand jury yet. Something surprising to me is Abdulwali Muhammad, the son-in-law of Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, is in on the interview. Just interesting to me. I doubt his presence would affect the outcome.
But I'll watch for the grand jury, they say April 11. I hope it's this year.lol The charges for the 2 beaten by the cops was in 2008 and just now being heard.
This link is the latest and has the transcript of the interview.

The officer named by the reporter has a civil case pending. I didn't see any indication that he's been adjudicated either in court or by his department as being brutal in any way. Or did I miss something?

We certainly need to know how the events of this particular evening unfolded. I don't see an issue with officers forcing their way into a home on what was essentially an unknown emergency. The dispatch tapes will show what exactly they were sent on. That will be important, if not crucial to the case.

There are claims that Chamberlain wielded a knife. It's odd that someone who inadvertently set off a medical alert device would respond in such a manner. But the course of events that people agree on, are that he was tased and then shot. That's the kind of actions that are consistent with officers meeting an armed individual, not someone who accidentally set off his alarm.

I'm not seeing this whole business about keeping the names of the officers secret. If it's a righteous shoot, you did it. Own up and move on. Maybe it's a New York thing. I don't put much stock in what people tell a reporter. If you've got a story to tell, put your left hand on the Good Book and tell it to the Grand Jury. Trying cases in the media is always a bad idea.

At the end of the day, we need to know the truth. Did the officers act lawfully or not? We don't want publicly funded assassins running about. If they were justified, they similarly should receive unconditional public support.

Just my two cents.

I need to respond to this. It is reported several times that Mr. Chamberland told them he was ok and didn't call them. Please go away. He pressed the button on his medallion and had the emergency workers to tell the police he was fine and didn't need them. The police insisted to go into the house and broke the metal door down, taking it off it's hinges. There is no reason for them to go in and I can see at this point that Mr. C had every right to have the knife altho he didn't use it. They tazed him hit him with bean bags and finally shot him. Ridiculous.

We don't have all the facts. What we do know, is that Chamberland activated his medical alert device, accidentally, on purpose or in between. We know the police were dispatched. We don't know what they were told the situation was. We have witnesses who claim the officers arrived with weapons drawn. That leads me to believe they were told this was something other than a medical emergency.

Once at the house, the officers have an obligation to make sure everything is alright. To that end, it may be acceptable that they force entry as an exigent circumstance may exist. Once inside, we know the officers shot Chamberland, but why? Did he have a knife? If so, why?

There's just too many unanswered questions in this case.

Yes to both of these. It's a terrible tragedy and the facts (when unearthed) will lead us to what really happened but, just on the surface, the police HAVE to enter because they have no idea if someone is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to say "it's okay, go away."

This story has so many conflicting elements.

Someone had better send out an advisory, then, telling people with medical alert bracelets and medallions that using them may lead to being shot to death by the police.
