Anal ...*whispers* warts.

What is the deal behind these? I did some research online and most sites pointed to the cause being HPV (Human Papillomavirus).
I can't begin to describe how distressing the thought of having HPV is, so I have to ask.. are there any other reasons or causes for anal warts?

Do they go away on their own? And if it ISN'T HPV, are they contagious?

Any comments/responses are much appreciated!

My best friend caught warts and gave them to his bf. His bf was beyond pissed. They do NOT go away on there own. Your doctor lances them off each time new ones form. Some are in your ass and they have to lance those also. my friend caught them on the base of his dick after infecting his bf anally and had to have those treated. Don't have any sex cause you WILL pass it on.

HPV causes anal warts. Some people can have the virus and not show symptoms. The percentage of guys having the virus is high. The HPV vaccine has been recommended for teenage girls. I haven't heard whether doctors are giving the vaccine to gays.

i asked my doctor about that - he said that it is possible to vaccinate guys as well, but there is absolutely no research if it works. it shouldn't be harmfull, but it is quite expensive.

@Will:
HPV is the only cause for anal warts. you might to check that you don't have herpes though.
they are quite easy to catch - skin to skin contact is enough, so sometimes even condoms don't protect enough.
the only good thing - the hpv type that cause anal warts is a different one from the one which causes anal cancer ..

There are tons of strains of HPV and it's found in the majority of the population, since it can be passed on through skin-skin contact with the infected area.

A lot o people have it and don't show any signs and have no symptoms and have no problems. Some people do have symptoms like warts and in the case of women, certain strains (mostly 4 key ones) can lead to cervical cancer. For men who exhibit anal warts, it can increase chances of rectal/colon cancer. So if you notice warts and test positive for HPV, you probably want to consult your doctor.

The warts are painless, though.

Vaccinations (and tests) for men are difficult and less effective. There isn't a large push because HPV doesn't usually have any serious threats to men's health. The only exception are anal warts (mostly for gay men) because of its ties to rectal cancer, but I'm uncertain of how common or uncommon that is anyway.

Thanks for the quick replies guys =].

So I'm going to go get tested for HPV asap. One question though: It is curable right? I read online that it takes a while, and many doctor visits, depending on how bad it is.

Does you guys know anyone who had it and how their treatment went?

HPV is an virus - thus, no cure.

I am not 100% sure, but I don't think the normal STD tests screens for HPV - at least I don't recall seeing on my print-out.

http://www.cdc.gov/std/HPV/STDFact-HPV.htm

I'm not sure, but the only treatments of which I'm aware, are surgical in nature.

you don't get cured afaik - they can just remove the warts. surgically - or with creams (if they are not inside the anus) which help your body defenses. it seems that they can return quite often when your immune system is weak, but that doesn't mean that yours will return. maybe you can get them removed and never notice them again. however - you will always carry the virus (i am not sure about that since some things i read say you carry the virus - others say the virus is in the infected skin - so if that does get removed are you still infected?).

Yes, on the Center for Disease Control's website, and here:
http://www.hpvforum.com/hpv-clearance.asp

It says that after treatment, and in some cases after a certain amount of time, most cases will clear on their own. Your immune system begins to respond to the virus and eventually surpresses it.

And according to the ARHP (Association of Reproductive Health Professionals), "Most people (up to 90%) who test positive for HPV with very sensitive tests for HPV (polymerase chain reaction [PCR] and Hybrid Capture® II) will become HPV negative on the same tests within 6-24 months from first testing positive. This is due to an effective immune response to HPV."
I'm assuming their studies are geared mostly towards women with the virus, but I would guess the same applies to men. It's the same virus.

I also had no idea how common it is: How common is HPV?
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted virus. It has been estimated that 75% or more of sexually active Americans will contract HPV sometime in their lives. This means that anyone who has ever had sexual relations has a high chance of being exposed to this virus, but only a small number of women, and even fewer men, infected with HPV develop lesions that are detected or need to be treated. In almost all cases, the immune system will keep the virus under control or get rid of it completely. - ASHA (American Social Health Association) http://www.ashastd.org/learn/learn_hpv_men.cfm

Wow, who knew?

But yea, I went to the doctor today, and he confirmed it after having me drop my pants and bend over =[. Not that I didn't already know!
I honestly think he was slightly misinformed about it. For one, he had to go look it up after realizing that's what I had, because either he didn't know about possible treatments, or he just couldn't remember.
And yes, I have to have them surgically removed. It could be much worse though, or so I'm telling myself haha.

After hearing that MOST cases do end up clearing up on their own, I can just hope I'm one of those cases. I guess I could start trying to boost my immune system by any means, if that might possibly help.
Now all I have to do is tell my boyfriend =/. For all I know, he could have given it to me, considering only a small percentage of infected people show symptoms.
*sigh*

Well, after all this I'm just gonna hope for the best. It's not the biggest deal in the world, even though it certainly felt like it for most of the day. And the fact that I'm pretty much doing this on my own (haven't told my Dad, and I WON'T either. There's no way in hell he would take it lightly, especially considering the only means of getting this, in the place I have it, is anal sex...) makes it a little bit more unnerving.

Any support or well wishes would be great! Lol =]

just keep an eye on it - if it gets worse (more warts etc) get the the surgery asap. i guess removing one wart maybe can be done without a night stay or so. but if there grew more, things might get complicated with your dad. interesting info about the virus disappearing, i didn't read that at the websites i read.

Sorry about this situation. But as you know there really is no cure. You can have them removed but they tend to grow back. I'm not sure you ever totally clear the virus. For more information you can check out...

http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic1037.htm

Although it is a bit technical, it has good information.

And you don't have to go through it totally alone... we all are here. I know it isn't the same. And hopefully your bf will be understanding as well.

I just quickly scaned this thread so sorry if this is repetitive info but, you dont have to get the warts removed surgicaly-your own immune system can clear them up on its own (but only superficaly, the virus is stickin around) provided your healthy enough other wise. Also they have found a vacine for use in women and i think its avalibe for men in Canada, but not the US. Unfortunitly they are incredibly contagious. Not even nessecary for direct contact but can be caught by even sharing a toy or finger or whatever. Best bet is to know your sexual health and ask the same of your partner(s)

i hope that doesn't get too offtopic now. but this little virus somewhat got me interested ;) and i read many of the ressources linked here and googled around a bit.
but still -
did i get that right that the virus kinda lives in the skin/mucous cells but not in body fluids? so can it only be spread if you have contact with the infected cells? IE if someone has anal warts but nothing on his penis, would it be transmittable over oral sex? it all sounds a bit like herpes i guess those are similar virii?
it is kinda weird that this disease is so common (although the infection percentages at the websites listed here heavily vary) but still you hardly ever hear about it.

Exactly Corny. The virus is spread via skin to skin contact so if the only infected cells are at the anus, then oral is fine. Interestingly, I don't know that I have ever heard of oral HPV warts. I wonder why that is.... open to suggestions.

And yes, it is a VERY common disease. But I think nobody talks about it much b/c it is RELATIVELY benign.

wats is more excitin is the vaccine they r using for women - gardasil and the conept of cross vaccination. It seems that the protection for the 4 sub groups of HPV MIGHT provide cross protection against other hpv subtypes and THAT is wat gets me excited

along those lines another thing to mention along the lines of ANAL warts is dont forget that syphalis can present with warty lesions around the anus so make sure ur physician tests for that please :P
