Cawthorn, whose trial was set to start Friday, entered a guilty plea for the third-degree misdemeanor charge of possession of a dangerous weapon on city property, according to his attorney Missy Owen.

The former Republican congressman was fined $250, without probation, and his firearm will be returned, his attorney said.

A member of the public, particularly in these States that have ultraliberal gun policies that require no education for gun permits, might have been able to say, "oops, I didn't realize that I had left it in my carry-on".

The standard should be higher for members of Congress. He might have pleaded guilty to get a lesser sentence but the fine should have been higher and the consequences should have been more severe.

The disabled pity card was what got him elected in the first place. But -- especially since it turned out that his lies about his biography were only mildly less appalling than George Santos's, and, like Santos's, the public didn't start learning about them until after the election -- the disabled pity card didn't work a second time, in either his old district or the one he tried to carpetbag into.
