There is more to this than meets the eye. It's all built in to the neo-Nazi, fascist persona. This hypermasculine conditioning technique is part of the radicalization of young men into their far-right crusade. It no different from Hitler's methods...
It's also a replay of America in the 1950s. During the 1940s, when American men were conscripted into military service, women stepped up to fill many of the societal roles traditionally occupied by men were now available to women. Those women had jobs. They had independent incomes. Prior to this period, women were expected to leave the work force when they married and devote their lives to homemaking and child-rearing.
When the war ended, there was a concerted campaign to return to the pre-war family structure. While television was showing us the "Ozzie & Harriet" and "Leave It To Beaver" happy family, the reality was that many of the men of the period returned from war with undiagnosed PTSD. Those of us who were around during that period from the 1950s-1970s remember what that model of "masculinity" looked like. Too often, it resulted in alcoholic fathers who were emotionally unavailable, wives who were addicted to tranquilizers for their "hysteria" and, later, a rebellion by their children against the system during the Vietnam war era.
Those post war years also really sucked if you were gay. While the McCarthy hearings on Anti-American Activities are presented as being anti-Communism campaigns, they were heavily focused on getting rid of "pansies" and "lavender women" in government. Gay menweren't masculine and lesbians weren't feminine, so that had to be corrected too. Companies hired private detectives to collect license plate numbers in gay bar parking lots and that was enough for an employer to fire employees.
What did people think that "Make America Great Again" meant? White Christian Nationalists are all too happy to get on the MAGA bandwagon because they, too, want to return to that idyllic period when men were men, women weren't equal, children were seen not heard and homosexuals were criminals.
As several members here have observed, Trump has no personal interest in Christianity. He is completely transactional and will give White Christian Nationalists whatever they want in exchange for votes. He is doing exactly what Putin, Erdoğan, Orban and others are doing by co-opting religion to stay in power.
It's going to be interesting to see what happens in the Missouri Senate race. Hawley started the summer polling >10% higher than Kunce. That lead is narrowing. The Post-Dispatch editorial calling Hawley "quite possibly the worst sitting senator in America right now" may weaken Hawley even more. The dispatch is reminding Missouri voters that ubermench-wannabe Hawley was part of the 2021 insurrection saying "one member stands apart for his singular role in spurring the violence that day: Sen. Josh Hawley." And that video of Hawley sprinting like a spooked gazelle on Jan 6th deserves a lot of replay.
