US politicians seem to be staggeringly stupid.

Why do they keep getting elected?

It's the wrong question. The question should, "What is wrong with us that we vote for people like this?"

As the saying goes, "In a representative democracy, if we elect idiots, it's idiots that they're representing".

How it began.... a beaming Joni Ernst promises to make Washington squeal like a pig: 🐷🐖

How it ended... walking through a cemetery, "we're all going to die": 💀☠️⚰️

After 10 years in Washington, Joni is thinking about going back to castrating hogs at home... *wave*🔚🏃‍♀️
Senate Republicans are bracing for another one of their colleagues to possibly call it quits: Joni Ernst.

The two-term Iowa senator hasn’t officially announced her plans for 2026, and she’s gone through some of the motions of launching another campaign, including recently hiring someone to manage it and announcing her annual fall fundraiser.

But three people granted anonymity to disclose private discussions said there is rising concern among fellow Senate Republicans that Ernst will retire rather than run for reelection, giving Republicans another seat to defend next fall.

She may realize that it will be an uphill climb to win her state again.

Meanwhile...Nancy Mace...performing again. And Newsom's press team is still right on top of it all.

What's wrong with us is this Reich-Wing media echo chamber that keeps feeding misinformation to these people. Along with republican politicians who are either liars feeding the same misinformation or who actually believe it themselves.

There is so much information about government programs out there, it is impossible to correct. People both left and right are so committed to this misinformation, that they get really angry when you try to tell them the facts. Medicare, Medicaid, especially Social Security are the big ones. Almost no one knows how the Social Security trust fund actually works, and it is impossible to tell them. They want to believe the lies. Yep, it is right there on the SSA website, but when they're shown the facts, it's a "deep state lie" because that is what Newsmax or Alex Jones told them. The liars and hate mongers are winning.

I once heard a fire-fighter explain that fire always seeks out fuel. That's the best way to describe what is happening in the media.

Read some of the trial documents from the Murdoch Trust court case.

There's a point in the testimony where one of the Murdoch brothers states that he wanted to present accurate responsible journalism. That blew up in Fox's face. He was overruled by Rupert and the other son, who basically said, "In order to keep viewers, we need to tell them what they want to hear". One specific example cited in the trial is the 2020 election when Fox said that Biden won Arizona. Fox was willing to pay out hundreds of millions of dollars for the lies they told because they knew that by telling their viewers what they wanted to hear, they would easily make enough money to cover any libel claims against them.

There are some bad actors in the right-wing and in the media manosphere. But the media can't be blamed for viewers who demand to be fed lies and outrage news, anymore than Bravo can be blamed for feeding the gays endless Housewives arguments. The media didn't start the fire but it is fair to say that they ensure that the fire gets the fuel that it seeks. The public demands bread and circuses and there's always someone who is going to give them what they demand.

It is kind of a feedback loop, isn't it. Viewers know the lies and outrage news because the media fed it to them. So the viewers demand to be fed more lies, so the media feeds them, so the viewers demand lies, so the media feeds them more insane, outrageous lies. And it goes on to the depths of absurdity. So yes, the media can be blamed because they're the ones spewing the lies. They could get some character, courage, and humility and stop broadcasting lies.

My view is it began with republican party politicians, and began with Nixon. That's when lying became a republican policy to achieve their goal. Oh, I know, all politicians lie, blah, blah, blah. But that's when lying became imbedded in party doctrine and policy, and, as a tool to get what they want. Lying and dishonesty is built into republican philosophy. Not just rando politicians lying. That why I keep saying deceit is republican policy.

I think that's the way that we need to view it. Why? Because if we "fix" the problem at Fox, the viewers will just go to RT, OAN or Newsmax to get their fix. We would have to fix all of the loop to stop the acceleration.

This craziness has always percolated in the background in our politics. The John Birchers and the Dixiecrats predated the Murdoch media. The insanity on the right about Communism in the 1950s is very similar to what we're seeing now. While this stuff swings like a pendulum, the accelerant that we're living with now is our phones and the algorithms that are feeding us more and more and more of content that it thinks we want to see.

We can try to change the libel laws so that media outlets that promote lies and Russian propaganda can be held liable to those that are hurt by the lies they promote but that will only fix one part of the loop. At some point, we're going to have to figure out what happened in society, in our churches, in our political parties and in the manosphere that has resulted in QAnon and some of the conspiracy nuttery that we're living with in the current times. It's going to be harder work to unravel those institutions of our society and get them back to a more rational behavior... but it's what we're going to have to do.

Joe Rogan.

One of the worst spreaders of conspiracy nonsense, lies and misinformation.

I assume his source is likely RFKjr

As I recall, it was Canadians who turned up last year to fight wildfires in the US.

So, what's next? Suing Canada for the effects of the Jet Stream when it blows down from Canada?

What an embarrassing toadying of MAGATs to back up the bully and thug (per Richard Gere).
