There were way too many of these rags flying from trucks or being carted around.

There hasn't been much mention of this in US national news, so my question was, "Are these guys coming from Alberta/Saskatchewan or are they coming across the border from northern Michigan/Wisconsin?"

“The ‘Freedom Convoy’ is nothing but a vehicle for the far-right,” according to the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, a non-profit that monitors hate groups. “They say it is about truckers … but if you look at its organizers and promoters, you’ll find Islamophobia, antisemitism, racism, and incitements to violence.”...

“On January 15th, a small team of Alberta truckers, their family members and friends, came to the decision that the Government of Canada has crossed a line with implementing Covid-19 vaccine passports and vaccine mandates,” the group said in a statement shared on Facebook.

“We are taking our fight to the doorsteps of our Federal Government and demanding that they cease all mandates against its people,” reads a GoFundMe page in support of the convoy, which has raised approximately $5.5m (over $7m Canadian) to date.

And ironically, the Trudeau family is in isolation because 4 of them have COVID-19. Somehow, I don't think the truckers will get a lot of sympathy from Trudeau this week.

The protest started out west, organised by Canada Unity. It was supposed to be peaceful and simply a protest against border vaccine mandates. As other truckers joined the protest from the other coast, the right wing anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers got involved and, before it reached Ottawa, it had turned into the hateful group we're hearing about now. The protest has also expanded into a demand for ALL Covid mandates to be eliminated.

It is no longer a protest. It is a mob.

Trudeau would have sympathised with the original protesters, but when the 'hate' entered the picture, he has no intention of meeting with them or negotiate with them (bold text mine):

One organizing group, Canada Unity, is demanding that government leaders either repeal the mandates or "RESIGN their lawful positions of authority immediately."

Asked if he would meet with some of the protesters now camped out in the parliamentary precinct — demonstrators who have vowed not to leave until all pandemic-related restrictions come to an end — Trudeau said he had no interest in going "anywhere near protests that have expressed hateful rhetoric and violence towards their fellow citizens."

"So to those responsible for this behaviour — it needs to stop," Trudeau said. "Canadians at home are watching in disgust and disbelief at this behaviour, wondering how this could have happened in our nation's capital."

Trudeau said that while Canadians have the right to protest, no one has a right "to abuse, intimidate and harass ... fellow citizens." He promised to press ahead with pandemic measures despite "intimidation" from some members of the convoy.
