I couldn't decide if they were trying to engender pity or "understanding" or pretending to be impartial, because they really didn't bother much with the reasons he's despicable. Frankly i could give a shit about his personal life, it's his public one that is important. That piece kind of dwells on tragedy possibly destroying a young man - and yeah, completely straightwashed him, not that that's any great surprise. I couldn't help but wonder how much analysis of his "complex" nature and speculation of his tragic mental state, and implication he should be helped, and the tragedy of his lost potential there would be if he didn't look like an Aryan poster boy and was instead named LaMont born in Watts.

And OH the excusing his reprehensible behavior - is it not possible that he was just a douche-baggy asshole to begin with?

Frankly if we're going to be very interested in his phycological state, exploring the behavior of right wing, white, entitled closeted men is suspiciously on point.

From Cawthorn's point of view, it is.

It's a good piece of journalism. Very fair. Sympathetic.

When I read it through, I thought about Max Cleland and Bob Dole: two men who were similarly disabled but had the character to become decent men and good public servants. Cawthorn didn't start with the kind of character that produces great men out of tragic circumstances. And when he was given then opportunity... well, we can see where he ended up.

His primary is Tuesday. It sounds like the people who care about him don't want him to win. For his sake.

Women settle lawsuit against Liberty University [WaPo]
A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed in federal court last summer against Liberty University by 12 women who accused the Christian institution of fostering an unsafe environment and mishandling sexual assault and harassment cases.

A notice of dismissal filed Wednesday by a lawyer for the plaintiffs and a statement by Liberty on Thursday said the case had been settled but did not provide details of the terms.

The women, former students and employees at the university in Lynchburg, Va., filed suit anonymously and were identified as Jane Doe 1-12. Their allegations, which spanned more than two decades, included descriptions of being raped or sexually harassed and having their cases mishandled or effectively ignored. You might enjoy reading about the "Armor Bearers". Apparently, the LGBT students at Liberty are terribly paranoid about being found out. If they are discovered, they are sent to the Armor Bearers group for conversion therapy ("for men only who are struggling with same-sex attraction").

Armor Bearers is apparently much more efficient than Grindr for meeting other LGBT people and because everyone knows every in Armor Bearers is gay, there's no longer any fear of being outed by someone you hook up with. :D
