The fundamental truth of gun crazies is that they've fetishized their guns and think guns are more important than the lives of stranger's children. Anecdote. One of my brothers, a gun lunatic, keeps a loaded pistol in the drawer of his coffee table, in case of "intruders." He lives on a farm surrounded by family and friends, way out in the country where everyone knows everyone. He has a 2, 6, and 12-year-old. They all have access to that gun. He doesn't find this strange or dangerous. No matter how many times my mom harangues him about it, he won't lock any of his guns up - because what's the point in having "protection" if it isn't always ready?
Of course, he also consumes a steady diet of Faux and thinks the race war is coming, but his gun obsession pre-dated that one.
The firearm industry has been working on these people for decades and they are programmed to think that gun is some kind of magical talisman that's going to enlarge their penis and stop all misfortune in the universe, and besides GOD gave it to them.
It's insane.
