August 22 1791 Beginning of the Haitian Slave Revolution in Saint-Domingue. Ending by the Independence of Haiti in 1825.
 
August 27, 1776 - Battle of Long Island - The British under General Howe defeat the American Revolutionaries under George Washington in what is now Brooklyn, NYC.

An interesting historical tidbit from the Revolutionary period. Some revolutionary period houses on the coast, especially in New England, Long Island & New Jersey sill have the chimneys painted black & white. This was a sign to British seamen who may have needed a place to hide, that the houses belonged to Loyalists. I'm a history nut, & I never knew this till I just read a novel which took place on Cape Cod, MA
