I've seen some strange things from the garden before, but this?

Haaaaaaaaa!

My garden (if you can call it that) has tomato plants, green onions and some squash that I planted. However, the squash is sort of a flukey thing because I bought a squash at the store one day (I don't remember the technical name for it, but it's nicknamed Japanese Pumpkin) and after I scooped out the seeds I was like hmmm, wonder if I planted these seeds it would grow?

So I took the seeds outside, dug a hole, tossed them down in, then covered them up. Totally forgot about them because I never expected anything to come from it. Well I've got squash plants popping up in that entire area that I planted the seeds in.

My green onions are the onions from hell. They come up every year on their own and they're so big they've gone to seed. I don't use them much.

This is how I'm growing my tomatoes this year:

Well...

This year a tree snaked its root all the way over to my tulip garden and starved the bulbs resulting in a weak showing...

So...

My BF dug them all up, cut and dragged the roots (with his jeep) out, and planted a great variety of annuals...

We now have to develop a theory -- find the bulbs -- FREEZE them starting in late July -- and plant them around Thanksgiving...

SO THAT NEXT YEAR -- We once again have a MOST FABULOUS tulip disply!!!

(!) (!) (!)

Ohhhhh! How'd you do that?

I bought the kit. They're called 'Tops Turvy' planters. You can grow all kinds of things in them. No worries about staking or tying the plants. No weeds, either.

Did you get them at like a regular garden center? I've never seen those before, that's cool! And would also be perfect for those that don't have the land room to plant.

I don't have much other than plants and flowers (well and a few snakes). But a friend of mine sent me these this past week.

I don't have the patience to tend to a vegetable garden, nor do I really have the use for that many vegetables. I did, however, just plant two lilac bushes that I bought my mother for her birthday. When I bought them, they already had a couple blossoms on them and have started growing more. Between the two, there are only about 5 bunches of flowers, but you can smell them in the whole neighborhood.

A few flowers and some tomatos.

I have a garden every year.

This is a photo of this year's garden that I took about 3 weeks ago.

The Grandmother got a pair of those last year (they're available at Plow & Hearth, which has all sorts of nifty gardening products... if you're into that kind of crap). They didn't produce any tangibly better results than a pot would. But then, tomatoes are kind of high maintenance, you have to water them consistently, and consistency isn't something we do in this family.

Our back yard is currently rioting with roses, about five different variations going at once (Fragrant Cloud, Honor, Judy Garland [I picked that one out], Queen Elizabeth, and Cecile Breunner). The rhodos are probably going too... but I'd have to go look to find out, and can't be bothered. The peach/plum tree (it's grafted at the trunk) didn't blossom, so hopefully it wont fruit again (the fruit is bitter and it draws bluejays).

Ever since I quit smoking, I hardly ever go back there anymore.

Awesome!

I'm crazy about growing my own veggies. I just wish I had more room.

My parents had a HUGE garden that covered the entire rear end of our back yard. Corn, beans, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, beets, potatoes, peas, etc. You name it, they had it. They even grew sunflowers.

My brother and sister and I used to fight over who was going to do the picking and who was going to help mom clean everything. Maybe that's where my love of vegetables started and my passion for growing my own food. But whatever, it was great and we had such fun with that garden.

One of my few pleasant childhood memories :)

I planted 3 kinds of tomatos yesterday and I have a few green pepper plants to put in the ground yet.

I'm not sure if I'm going to do a full garden this year. I did get the flowers planted though.

You know what? I've never had any luck with peppers, for some reason. If I get any at all, they're always real tiny. Every single time. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

What kind of tomatos? I have Celebrities, Rutgers, and Big Boys. Peppers too. I'm going to try peppers next year in those planters.
