In the past hour, Christchurch has been hit by another couple of large aftershocks following the 6.3 in Feb which killed 160 people. They've had a 5.5 and a 6.0 with more damage to the central city. No fatalities reported as yet.

Strong quake again rocks damaged New Zealand city

by The Associated Press

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A series of strong earthquakes shook the quake-weary New Zealand city of Christchurch on Monday, briefly trapping two people inside a church.

The quakes forced people to flee in panic from buildings. There were no initial reports of injuries.

Christchurch has been shaken by thousands of aftershocks since a 6.3-magnitude quake killed 181 people in February.

A series of tremors were felt on Monday, the largest of which the U.S. Geological Survey recorded at magnitude 6.0.

One of the temblors trapped two people inside St. John's Church, which mostly collapsed in the February quake. Police said they have since been rescued. Another building nearby was brought down, but no one was inside.

People attending inquest hearings for victims of the Feb. 22 earthquake reportedly bolted from the Riccarton Park Function Center when Monday's quakes struck. Others fled from buildings at Canterbury University and the Westfield Riccarton Mall, which also suffered heavy damage in February.

I saw a program about New Zealand designing earth quake proof homes.
Its a must to build earth proof buildings up to 9.5 scale.

Here's hoping no one was hurt..as for the earthquakes..here's also hoping they are the last ones for a while.

Not too bad guys. 10 people injured, but no fatalities reported.
Any damage was mainly confined to those buildings damaged in the last one and due for demolition anyway.

This is very good news. I sincerely hope the fatality count remains at 0, and that the injuries are minimal. Much like Queensland recently, it seems New Zealand can't seem to catch a break.

I'm glad to hear that you're okay JAG (*8*)

It seems to me that the licquafaction is almost as bad if not worst than last time

Hope you're ok pixie77,

Here's some footage of the moment the 5.5 hit (the lesser of the two). It's at a maori meeting house. One guy is giving a speech (in maori), the whole thing shakes, and then the bald guy on the left says ... "wow, that was some speech" and everyone laughs.

Thanks for keeping us posted and alerted JAG. I am glad to hear that it was not a lot of deaths, however ever a few injured is sad, and that destruction was mainly to building yet to be demolished from the last quake. Again thanks, and I am sure we will respond with whatever help we can from the states. Goodday to you, and stay well and safe.

I can see something wrong in this video.
They are all men. Most are anyway.

Thanks Shep. I'm well. The continuing earthquakes in christchurch are a long way from me and I don't even feel them.
Both have now been upgraded in strength. The first one to a 5.7 and the 2nd to a 6.3 which was the same strength as the one in feb that killed 180 people. Fortunately, this one was further away from the city though. There has now been one death confirmed from the latest 6.3.

hey bloke , you're having some shit luck over there , i know you fullas are used to the ground shakin and everything , but i i think it could be an early warning , how long since you had any serious volcanic action in that area ? hope it settles down soon , but maybe should come over to some solid ground for a while :D

Good that the fatalities are minor. I pray for your safety (*8*)

Thanks for the offer. :)
I've actually never felt an earthquake in the part of the country I live in. The geologists reckon there is no correlation between the earthquakes and any upcoming volcanic activity. The South Island gets quakes all the time, and have done for centuries. It's just that these ones have been so shallow and close to the city that have caused the havoc.
