Another huge earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

Here's some footage of the devastation as a tribute to the trauma our friends in Christchurch have gone through today ....

... rescue teams working through the night ... someone trapped in a building just rang talkback on her cellphone ... waiting to be rescued ...
Some guy also rang talkback earlier and said his whole street was without power or water ... they gathered around for support and he finally met the gay couple from 2 doors down, who he said were 'nice fellows' ... sometimes a little good comes out of tragedy.

Christchurch boy here, I'm doing good and got really lucky, all the people in my life are OK and my house is doing fine.

It's horrible though, being here and seeing all the stuff you see everyday just being destroyed like that.

I hope and pray that everyone in New Zealand is doing well.

Like what happened in NZ, for all of us in the Pacific Rim this is a daily worry...

OMG. I hope the death count is low. Watching this on the news right now. My good thoughts and love for the people of christchurch.

I quickly saw this thread yesterday, soon after it was posted. Did not think much of it at the time. Then, this morning I got a call from my parents saying that my brother was over there when it happened!:eek: They were calling to say that he was o.k. (I did not even know he was over there) It did not dawn on me until I was talking to my parents about the details, that it was the same quake mentioned in this thread! So, I went to the news sites, then back to this. Wow....that was really something. **hugs** for anyone there who is suffering the after affects of this quake........

I grew up in Christchurch and have a sister still living there. I phoned her as soon as I heard the news; no answer so I left a message and called her as soon as I got home from work.
Initially I spoke to her husband who was close to the phone and they were sitting in their 2 storey home basically in the dark at 8pm. Their phone had just been re-connected but they were without electricity, water or sewerage and said they were in survival mode. They realised an earthquake had hit when the kitchen cupboards flew open and everything inside hurtled out and smashed on to the floor. There was some damage to the house but nothing structural thankfully.
Spoke to my sister and she was pretty shaken. Since the initial shock last year there have been constant aftershocks, like on a daily basis and you feel every one of them large or small. She will not be sleeping in the house tonight. She has decided to sleep in the car for the next few nights anyway. She feels it's the only safe place.
Thankfully the landing strip for aircraft is ok though the buildings are not safe so the emergency planes can land and take off. There are rescue teams flying in from everywhere.
It's devastating to see it on the news

Latest :
Search teams worked through the night, searching the buildings. Australian teams have arrived and have now relieved some of the kiwi teams. US and Japan teams are expected to arrive soon.
It is reported that 75 people are dead and another 300 missing. Hopefully a lot of those will be pulled out alive.

The resilience of people is phenomenal and hopefully they will find all of them alive. What a tragedy after making such progress from the last earthquake. It certainly takes it's toll on everyone. My heart goes out to all.

According to reports on the radio, there's a 15 storey building that is threatening to topple over. It moved 5 metres to one side in a matter of minutes. This is hindering rescue efforts.

I have to say that I am still in shock after seeing what has happened in Christchurch. While I did not live in Christchurch during my study abroad experience in New Zealand back in 2005 I did visit there. Christchurch actually has a special place in my heart as a gay man - the first gay bar I went into was in Christchurch and actually the first time I was intimate with another man was in Christchurch. My hear it is surely aching for such a warm and friendly city at the moment.

On top of that I have to say that I was really impressed with how charming the city is - one of New Zealand's most charismatic cities and had a real old/historical feel to it, which was very nice to see. One thing I can say though about New Zealand is that the people there are very strong and I have no doubt they will be able to overcome this tragedy and become even stronger.

So even though I am an American, New Zealand will always be a country I consider myself apart of and is a second home to me - to my fellow Kiwis, know that I am standing with you through this terrible tragedy.

^ Did they say which one? I believe I stayed at the YHA in central Christchurch when I was there.

In the last hour, Christchurch has been hit by it's 2nd major earthquake in 6 months. This one was 6.3 on the richter scale but was much shallower than the one in September last year. Buldings are down ... injuries ... things are not quite known yet ... pictures just coming through on the tele. Major. Luckily, I'm in the north island and didn't feel it. People of the city traumatised.
You've heard it first on JUB !

You're the first person I thought of when I heard the horrible news..I'm glad you are Ok..

Sending thoughts and prayers to your country JAG..(*8*)

Bad news. They seem to have called off searching the CTV building for survivors with something like 50 people still unaccounted for.
