Rand Paul, who touts his career as a Kentucky eye doctor as part of his outsider credentials in his campaign for U.S. Senate, isn't certified by his profession's leading group.

He tried Monday to bat away questions about it by calling it an attack on his livelihood, saying the scrutiny stems from his challenge of a powerful medical group over a certification policy he thought was unfair.

Seeing Rand Paul face plant like this has been a blast. Seeing Tea Baggers put all their eggs in one basket and then watching them rot has been the reason I'm in such a good mood lately.

there are sooo many things wrong with Rand Paul.

when he was asked if black people should be allowed to sit at the counter to eat at a public place, he refused to answer, stating he didn't agree with all of the civil rights act.

Then he went on Fox and said that the liberal media was playing Gotcha....

it was simple question. But he is from the teabagger movement and they are fond of their racist signs and swastikas, so IMO he can't really admit to supporting civil rights and keep their attention.

Rand Paul has the worst toupee I've seen in years. You think with all that money he's inherited he would buy a better one.

Are you saying Rand Paul didn't attend Baylor University, didn't graduate from Duke Medical School, didn't complete a general surgery internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta and didn't complete his residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center?

Because that would be the only way that he would be "lying" about his credentials. That Dr. Rand doesn't believe the AMA should have a stranglehold on who gets to call themselves a specialist is consistent with his libertarian views. By what right does the AMA get to decide who is and is not a specialist?

I just read that Mr. Paul is NOT a board certified doctor.

Looks like the only medical certification Dr. Rand Paul may have is his own.

Kentucky Senate candidate Rand Paul has touted his experience as an eye doctor, but his certification is not recognized by the American Medical Association.

According to the Courier-Journal in Louisville, The Tea Party booster is not a "board-certified" ophthalmologist.

Paul, instead, is certified by the National Board of Ophthalmology, a group he founded in 1999 and currently serves as the head of.

The right wing gets kookier and kookier.

Looks like people have no idea what medical certification is.

Dr. Paul was board certified by the ABO from 1995 to 2005 until he decided not to renew his specialty through them because he objects to the AMA monopoly on board certifications so he founded a rival group.

Don't you people ever bother to check stories and cross check or do you just believe the first things someone says?

Apparently you didn't read the article or did the research on your own. Creating a group only to certify yourself doesn't make you a doctor.

Mr. Paul is a quack with a bad toupee living off his father's money and influence. The same thing most of these right wing nut jobs do. Randy Paul is George W Bush Junior.

Hence he is not board certified at this time, except by his own made up board, which is not recognized the American Board of Medical Specialties.

I guess if you consider any board that anyone makes up to be acceptable, anyone can be board certified.

Why look at that -- I'm a psychiatrist, certified by the board I just made up.

True, though board certification isn't the same as a license.

If you went to undergraduate school, medical school, completed internships and residencies in psychiatry, I would say you are a psychiatrist and you don't need any other organization to extort money out of you on a regular basis.

By what authority does the American Board of Medical Specialties certify specialists?

True, though board certification isn't the same as a license.

an organisation to certify qualified drivers is pretty much a drivers ed class. it can help getting a license, but it does not replace it.

I don't want my doctors to be certified by the coach of the hockey team, or the medical equivalent of such.

licensing is a legal process that can't be dismissed because you don't like the rules.

If you went to undergraduate school, medical school, completed internships and residencies in psychiatry, I would say you are a psychiatrist and you don't need any other organization to extort money out of you on a regular basis.

If you don't care if your physician is certified, that's your choice.

By what authority does the American Board of Medical Specialties certify specialists?

By the authority of expertise and broad consensus.

But my made up board can certify too, just like Rand's does. Would you like to be certified?

If you don't care if your physician is certified, that's your choice.
But that isn't the topic here, it was that somehow Rand Paul was lying about being a licensed physician and a qualified ophthalmologist.

He is both licensed and qualified.

And of course you dodged the question on who gets to call themselves a specialist.

If you went to undergraduate school, medical school, completed internships and residencies in psychiatry, I would say you are a psychiatrist and you don't need any other organization to extort money out of you on a regular basis.

So based on the above, going to college, med school and completing internships and residencies in psychiatry, do you think that person can call their self a psychiatrist?

But that isn't the topic here, it was that somehow Rand Paul was lying about being a licensed physician and a qualified ophthalmologist.

Rather, it's that he could be said to have lied about being board certified.

And of course you dodged the question on who gets to call themselves a specialist.

You didn't ask me about who gets to call themselves a specialist. You asked about certification of specialists, which I answered.

So based on the above, going to college, med school and completing internships and residencies in psychiatry, do you think that person can call their self a psychiatrist?

A person such as you described can legitimately call him or herself a psychiatrist. Just not a board certified psychiatrist, until such time as he or she is board certified.

Or until he or she makes up his or her own board.

Isn't it funny how the Repugs are all defending him with their silly logic?

Oh well... you know... he formed his own board and gave himself a medal...

Too bad it wasn't in installing hair plugs, he could have saved himself some cash.

rand paul is a political gift to the democrats that is going to keep on giving up until the very end.

The teabaggers are going to go down in flames and this guy has appointed himself the posterboy.

HA

Jasun, if you do make up your own university I will be happy to accredit it with my made up accreditation authority.

See how easy that is?

(And if you have any questions about he authority of my accreditation entity, please remember I am board certified in such matters.)
