The whole place, Washington DC, is a cesspool full of lying bastards. So what's new? :-) The congress is bought & sold for and Obama is up to his big ears in lobbyists.

Did you ever exaggerate (lie) on a resume' or at a job interview? We have the press and a campaign to sort through matters before elections. Our elected officials are on a constant job interview, with people throwing cash at them from all directions. Cash that is needed for the campaigns. Campaigns are too long, too expensive, and filled with lies. We need people willing to study and willing to vote. It doesn't happen often. And "throwing the bum out" for another, less senior bum doesn't seem to resolve anything.

he has a beautiful house in Ireland ;)

too bad too - i really liked him during the primaries - he seemed thoughtful and intelligent - the latter is still true

greed is rampant and it knows no party

Dodd lied about his mortgage, too. Dodd is a lying asshole.

Despite their denials, influential Democratic Sens. Kent Conrad and Chris Dodd were told from the start they were getting VIP mortgage discounts from one of the nation's largest lenders, the official who handled their loans has told Congress in secret testimony

Dodd got two Countrywide mortgages in 2003, refinancing his home in Connecticut and another residence in Washington

The OP was discussing Senator Dodd. Let's try and keep this close to being on topic, OK?

Yes. Dodd should be in prison along with Barnie Frank and many more. The Dems were in control of congress the last two years of Bush's term. Bush tried since his first budget to tighten regulations on Fannie and Freddie but those two stopped it. But of course for a lot on here it is all Bush's fault. Everything is Bush's fault. Never mind the truth of Dodd and Frank, and the fact the economy was fine until Pelosi and Reed took over Congress the last two years of Bush's Presidency.

However. They are all liars, one term of 2 years should be it for House, and one term of 4 years for Senate, and one term of 6 years for the President. That way they won't have to worry about re-election and all the lobbyists and maybe, just maybe politicians will do the will of the people, rather then the will to get rich on the tax payers expense.

My opinion? I oppose term limits and propose lifting them wherever they exist. It is to our advantage to have experienced officials. Besides, we have the opportunity to limit their terms at each election.

I oppose campaign finance reform. I see it as a violation of free speech as protected by the First Amendment.

I approve of professional lobbyists. They allow constituent voices to be heard despite the inability of those constituents to visit officials' offices.

I wish Sen. Dodd would champion these positions.

George WTC Bush lied about WMD and the need for war in Iraq. Funny, I don't recall you calling him "a lying asshole." ..|

plenty of assholes to go around

really .......... everyone has one ;)

one particular brand of asshole that perturbs me greatly is the kind that constantly hijacks threads and inserts material that does not relate to the topic

anyone know anyone like that

I'm not a fan of term limits... But if enacted 'might' help?

Let's hope this lying sack of shit gets his ass handed to him in the next election and for good measure let's get rid of that dingbat pelosi while we are at it.

There goes his reelection effort.

Looks like the asshole is going to have his congressional career ended in shame, just like his father.

Dooya? I mean, consider how HARD it must be for poor, little ole GE to make its voice heard in Ye Olde Halls of Congress, huh? I mean, their voices must get drowned out by all those powerful poor people from Georgia and the inner cities of America, dontchathink? Without lobbyists, GE would never, ever have a chance to be heard.

Haha. For once, Alfie, I agree with you. The whole idea of lobbyists is asinine. As if the rich and powerful need any more help getting their agenda heard...

Without lobbyists, those poor people from Georgia would have no voice to speak of. I approve of my lobbyists. I guess I might as well approve of everybody else's as well.

Lobbyists arent the problem here.

When asses like Dodd & Obama browbeat their political opponents over taking evil lobbyists $$$ and say they are 'clean' of doing so but in fact doing the same is the problem.

I agree with you. Sen. Dodd should defend the noble and honorable profession of lobbying.

Who is their lobbyist? Who are yours?

Their lobbyist? I was talking about GE's lobbyists to whom AdmiralAlfie referred. My lobbyists? ACLU lobbyists to start with. The ACLU opposes campaign contribution limits; so I guess I'm in good company.

His opponent is one of the less objectionable Republicans. However I say that without local knowledge. Others may have more to say.
Dodd has his interests. Simmons has others. In the case of Simmons, the Republican, he wants the nation to keep building F-22's because the engines are made in Connecticutt.

Everybody's got interests.

I heard his is double digit points behind in the latest polls

deservedly

The problem is not lobbying and lobbyists, per se. The problem is lobbyists who spread money around to politicians in order to buy access to that politician. What good is a lobbyist if a politician won't talk to him. A lobbyist for poor people in Georgia or the inner cities get much less access than a lobbyist for GE.

Perhaps one good reform would be to forbid politicians from meeting with any lobbyist who gave that politician a campaign contribution.

Politicians are supposed to put their investments in a blind trust when they get into office to limit conflicts of interest. Therefore, maybe an even better reform would be to import the same concept into campaign financing. All campaign contributions should be put in a blind trust, with the amounts and identities of the contributors kept confidential and not disclosed to the candidate. Should a contributor ever disclose his or her contribution, then they should be prohibited from lobbying, or hiring a lobbyist to lobby, that politician for a specified number of years, maybe three or four.

By the way, I am a hardcore, left-wing Democrat who has never voted for a Republican. I think Dodd is a sleaze bag who should not run for re-election.

I hope you join me in wishing Sen. Dodd a speedy recovery.

prostate cancer seems to be very common these days - or maybe it's just being diagnosed when it wasn't before

good luck to senator dodd in his fight against cancer

but it should in no way deter those who look to get to the bottom of his shady dealings

I wish him well and a speedy recovery. I want him well so he can appear on his behalf in court. So, he's down in his polls? So sad.

Alfie, corruption is corruption. It doesn't look like Dodd did anything illegal, but the sweetheart deal with Countrywide (excuse me, the "VIP" treatment), even if it is not illegal, and even if there was no quid pro quo, still stinks. It breeds cynicism and gives the appearance of impropriety. I do not want to see a Republican take the Connecticut Senate seat. But I don't think we ask too much of politicians that they avoid the appearance of improper conduct, as well as actual misconduct. Dodd can say all he wants that he "snubs" lobbyists. He can vote the right way on all of the important legislation. But a lot happens behind closed doors, in meetings, over drinks, at parties, that determines whether good laws get passed. Can any of us have confidence that Senator Dodd has not been influenced by his "VIP treatment" by Countrywide in how he has shaped legislation reforming our financial system? I think the answer is obvious.

I think Dodd should make way for an honest Democrat and not run for re-election. Any other progressive, left-wing Democrats agree with me?
