Another college shooting; another 10-13 young people killed. I welcomed the President's anger but where is the action?

If he's waiting for the NRA or Republicans to come to the table, he'll be dead and buried in Arlington before that is likely to happen. It's time the Attorney General, Law Enforcement, and the President lead -- craft legislation and provide written solutions. The NRA and Republicans will instead call another hearing on Planned Parenthood or Benghazi but there would be written proposals for the public to see that point to a solution. Shove the collective solutions in their faces and bring it up in each and every debate and public presentation. Perhaps it's going to take a shooting on every campus before something finally gets done but this is disgusting.

I would repeat one statement the president made: after 9-11 when we lost 3,000 Americans, I now wait in lines at airports to have my socks checked and water bottles recycled while collectively we have spent more than $1 trillion in prevention in this country and $7 trillion on two less than successful wars that ignited the Middle East (I apologize for digressing).

We've lost tens of thousands to gun violence and several hundred just on school campuses. And yet the NRA will issue a statement that it is "too soon to discuss this;" Republican boobs will repeat the line that "we can't politicize this act and it's too soon," and we'll see another school shooting in about 2 more weeks. When will we have enough?

I think the usual reaction is to suggest that every single other student also carries a gun, so situations like this can turn in to cowboy movie shootouts.

Something to know about republicans: They want everything, and they want someone else to pay for it.

They want their guns, and their welfare, corporate welfare and red-state welfare, and they want democrats to pay for it.

As long as republicans can use the gun issue against this country we will be held to their unrealistic ideology and they will use it, just like their baseless threats to 'cede' from the country and to say they value the bill of rights, which was never a republican or conservative idea to begin with. Republicans dont even know what they stand for.

Republicans have no moral values on this issue because its more important to them to use this issue against democrats than to save peoples lives, even their own. How do you treat people who dont even respect themselves?

Same thing for abortion, republicans are against abortions, but use abortions at a much higher rate than progressives. Republicans want the choice of abortion but the 'issue' that they are against it to shame progressives for the moral crimes they are committing.

Red America is a disgusting mess. Republicans don't value life. They are unprincipled sacrilegious anarchists.

What total nonsense. Republicans appear to pay most of the taxes. White tend to have higher incomes and tend to vote Republican. Blacks and hispanics tend to have lower incomes, and vote democrat. Republicans resist tax increases, democrats get elected by promising to raise taxes on others and to indeed raise taxes whenever they get the chance. While Republican states get welfare, democrats like to forget that those states have large minority populations, which receive more welfare and which tend to vote democrat.
It is democrats who want more welfare, while Republicans resist: medicaid, food stamps, earned income "credit", unemployment insurance and extensions, affirmative action (another form of welfare) etc.

When will this type of violence finally be labeled, accurately, An Act of Terrorism?

No.

Mark my words.

As I've said on every occasion this has happened since Sandy Hook....the weeping and wailing and anger will soon turn to indifference. In fact, there really is no rage any more...just resignation to the fact that the NRA owns all the legislators everywhere and are determined to get every person in the US from the age of 5 on up packing weapons.

I'm only waiting for the usual NRA 'blame the victims' statement today...the usual 'it is not the time to talk about this' nonsense from the right wingers....I see we've already had the usual deflection from Benvolio.

The US is addicted to ammunition. And just shooting at anything. Way too many Americans see the answer to every question and the solution to every problem as pointing a gun.

But it is about time that there is a realization that This has gone from episodic to epidemic to endemic. I suspect though that most of the country will just shrug this one off too.

I will tell you what will get gun laws changed.

If at any time before the 2016 election that a black guy or someone of middle eastern background mows down a group of folks...the Republicans will be howling for some form of race based gun control or screening for being a Muslim. That would satisfy everyone.

I want to see EVERYONE in the US including grandmas ... etc
carry guns where ever they go for afew years and see what happen.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2013, 33,804 people died from motor vehicle traffic accidents — and 33, 636 died from firearms.

Should we also ban cars?

I wonder how many people died by guns
and how many people died by car accidents in the UK and then you can decide.

Also car accidents and killing people on purpose are not comparable.

I quoted a United States source...the CDC... for the topic is related to a massacre in the United States..

The results are the same....people die violently....and driving under the influence...of alcohal..deaths are not accidents.

The United Kingdom is 243,610 square kilometers or 94,060 square miles
That’s about 57% the size of California (423,970 square kilometers). From the southern tip of England to the northern end of Scotland would stretch from Los Angeles to the Oregon border.

Texas (696,241 square kilometers) is almost 3 times larger than the United Kingdom

No no this will not work, not just because of size but other factors before you even get down to laws.

Yea, that's for sure. Republicans do everything in their power to resist anything that actually helps people. Their "worship the rich and kick down hard on the poor" mentality has worked so well that they can't seem to get inside the White House anymore, despite gerrymandering governorships and legislatures. Fascism doesn't work and repubicans have yet to learn that lesson.

Benvolio is correct that most higher wage earners tend to be Republican leaning; when I attend Log Cabin Republican meetings I find the same true. They focus on how to keep as much money as possible and anyone else can be damned. I always find it amusing when four or five of them have lost jobs or been fired. Suddenly all of those "Democrat" safety net programs aren't such bullcrap. One, who is an attorney, had to use housing certificates (and he used to sit on the board that issued them and bitch all the time about poor people taking advantage of the system). I guess he didn't like sleeping on a bench in Dupont Circle.

However, the new Republican party today is one of greed, selfishness, and little resembles the Republican party of the past. It is vile, evil, and war mongering.

Maybe you can compare Australian road deaths to Australian gun deaths.
The suburban living and driving is similar to the US. I don't have the stats.

...If ONLY ______________________ had guns this would NEVER have happened!...

(fill in the blank for yourself, I've run out of demographics)

People who are going to insist that gun proliferation will solve all societal ills, have drunk the kool-aid, and aren't going to listen to some foreigner who is obviously a socialist.

A better argument is that crazy people with guns kill more people, than crazy people without guns. REGULATE!

Yes, REGULATE with background checks for mental illness and criminal records.
No one argued to ban guns. The NRA want everyone to have guns is the problem.

Just some interesting statistics. Perhaps Mexico and Central/South America will want to build a wall to protect them from the United States and the violence we may bring. While their rates are higher from gun deaths; guess where many of the weapons came from (under George Bush II, we began seeding weapons into the cartels):

We have always had guns in the USA. We have always had young men, sometime the times have been good...other times, not so good.
Some young men have always felt lonely, isolated, angry and powerless.

What the young men who do the shootings today have is a catalyst. That catalyst is the story of the last mass shooter. Seeing his face,
hearing his name, seeing people running in fear, watching his victims being buried.

Right now some isolated angry young man is watching the events of this last shooting and thinking "I can do that".
"I can make the President of the United States angry".

We have to stop giving them this free press and power.
