  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
    Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Anthony Hopkins was a musician in his youth. Andre Rieu and his orchestra play the sonata he wrote when he was only 19.

Didn't know that about him. Nice. :)

Didn't he date Martha Stewart?

Back in the 90s I was lucky to get an autograph from him. He flew into Teterboro Airport in NJ and I had asked his stewart for his autograph and he obliged and signed part of a newspaper article that was about himself.

^ I checked Anthony's music on YouTube. There was no one other than Rieu playing it except for a piano version.

Have you heard Rieu's compositions? Mozart was composing better music when he was three.

How nice. But what did Anthony Hopkins do to deserve André Rieux? I've never seen or heard Rieux's circus in action before. It was like being force-fed a whole three-tier wedding cake.

I'm looking forward to the first performance of Joan Armatrading's Symphony No. 1 by the rather more classy Chineke! Orchestra in London in November.

Chi-chi Nwanoku CBE, Chineke! Orchestra founder, says: "The Chineke! Orchestra are thrilled to be performing the world premiere of Joan Armatrading's first symphony at the Southbank Centre. Armatrading's pioneering spirit and ability to break boundaries has been a source of inspiration for generations of music lovers and musicians, and it’s an honour to bring her latest composition to life on stage."

I missed that announcement -- cool! I presume it will be on BBC Radio 3 at some point ...

This simplistic waltz has no counterpoint. Are we mistaking Anthony Hopkins for Antony Hopkins?

No. Here is an article/interview with Sir Anthony Hopkins on the matter from 2012;

You can tell that the teenage Hopkins was using a piano for this simple tune.

And someone else came along and swamped the simple piano tune with a heavy blanket of strings.

And indeed it is. The concert is on Friday, the broadcast is on Tuesday evening, 28 November. I'm kicking myself for leaving it too late to get a ticket, I should have realized it would sell out fast. If you've got access to the BBC Sounds app you can hear it whenever you like (I think they archive concerts for about a month).
