Can antibiotics be used externally on a small cracked lip in the corner of the mouth?


I'm applying antibiotic powder (wet with water) on a corner the lip,
but not sure if this is ok?

Don't you have Neosporin in Australia? Not sure from the picture, but that looks more like cold sore, in which case you would need something like Carmex.
 
Yeah I'd use Polysporin. However if it is a cold sore you'd need a prescription for Valtrex or Zovirax or something. Do you have powdered antibiotic laying around the house? Actually I've never heard of powdered antibiotic.
 
I seriously doubt that the antibiotic you're using is actually doing anything. Something like neosporin might help, but doubtful. But are you sure you don't have a cold sore?

Powdered antibiotic...a spare capsule pulled apart of an antibiotic regimen will yield powder.
 
I wouldn't use topical antibiotics there because like chapstick you know you will end up consuming some of it. If it is less severe than that picture, it doesn't seem too severe. Just use some very gentle facial cleanser or just wash the area with water and put on a very gentle lip balm or vaseline until you can see a doctor if you find you need to. Just my opinion.

Yep, i pulled apart a spare capsule (cilopen vk/penicillin v).
Just wondering if it is ok to apply penicillin on the skin/corner of the cracked mouth.

The pic in post 1 was not accurate. I'll try and find a better pic.

I've had the same issues a couple months ago. Not sure if it's bacterial or fungal... Mine were a bit different because they looked slightly darkened in the corner of my mouth.

This is just a remedy that seemed to work for me. Before bed, I got a Q-tip and dipped it in rubbing alcohol. Applied to the corner of my mouth, and then got some Vaseline and applied some over it. By morning, it was almost gone.

I still don't know what it was or why it went away.

I'm a bit skeptical of remedies and the like--I prefer the empiricism of science, but I really it worked... :)

My post was based on that Pic 7...

To come to think of it, I think the reason I had it was due to a combination of things: abrasive mouse wiping while eating and dry skin.

for me i don't think it is the case.
It happens quite often. It comes and goes but i don't know why.

It is quite annoying because if you open your mouth too wide it hurts.


And it prevents you from sucking cock LOL
 
i think if it was a coldsore it would look more bumpish and have some puss maybe. yours looks like dryness.

vaseline will add that needed moisture and make your lips soft. [adding vitamin-e oil will help too]
 
It honestly sounds like that area is just dry.

You should just try my remedy. It really worked for me.

Antibiotics can be used on cold sores. But it's a waste of perfectly good antibiotics because cold sores are caused by a virus.

Most the time, the sores will heal themselves- usually when the event that triggered the cold sore goes away. Cold sores are reactivation of dormant herpes simplex virus infections and they can be triggered by colds (hence the name), viruses, stress, sun exposure, etc.

Just keep the site moist with an ointment or petroleum jelly.

If they persist or occur frequently, you can get a prescription for an antiviral that will help keep them in check.

so the pic on post 7 is a cold sore?
I thought a cold sore is round and on the lips.

Most often, cold sores do affect the junction of the lip and the face. They can occasionally affect the corners of the mouth.

It's difficult to diagnose from a picture but the lesion in #7 looks like what is called angular stomatitis. Stomatitis is an inflammation of the interior of the mouth. But stomatitis doesn't just happen- it's a symptom of a lot of different problems. If it doesn't clear up with keeping it moist, you should see your doctor.
 
I suspect your lip sore is actually what Kara said---angular stomatitis. Do you feel tired easily lately? Or sore tongue too? Or you look paler than usual? If yes, then you may be suffering from B12 or folate deficiency.

I suggest you go to your GP to check it out though, just to make sure it's not cold sores.
 
Its all cleared up now.
I'm sure it will come back again someday.
