i know this is kind of a personal question but have any of you had experiences with prescribed anti depressants? i have chronic anxiety (diagnosed as borderline agoraphobia) and part of my treatment to get this under control is a 25mg dose of paxil daily. i have noticed a difference but at the same time, it has caused me to put on a little bit of weight (a known side effect). i have always been fairly slender and fit and i didn't put on a ton of weight (went from 5'8 150 pounds to around 160-165). i work out and some of this weight is muscle but it is still discouraging that i have packed on a few pounds of fat due to a pill.

my first question is if anyone else has been on paxil and if they found a way around the weight gain. my second question is if there is something better on the market.

this is my first post but i have been lurking for a couple of days and this seems like a great community.

I haven't been on that specific drug. A few years ago I used to have different stuff prescribed for depression and what.
some of them do have side effects similar to that.
Sometimes the side effects are short term and you will notice things go back to normal after a short time..

My best advise I can give you is to talk to your Doctor! Really they are the best person for this, if you still are concerned. Or talk to a pharmacist.

Hope it all works out for you mate...

I was on paxil many years ago and I strongly advise you to get on something else. I gained weight, but I also couldn't get an erection for 6-8 months. When it came time to actually have feelings, paxil does a great job of shutting them all down. I'm no doctor, but the best one I've used so far has been effexor; it goes to other neurotransmitters that the others miss. Many psychiatrists no longer write paxil as a prescription.

I've been on Effexor for several years with good results. Ask your doctor about SNRI's. They're the latest (Effexor is one) and seem to be the best.

I took zoloft, 100mg, for a little over a year for anxiety and panic attacks. It did the trick and the only bad side effect was delayed orgasm. It really took a long time for me to get off.

Funny thing was, once I quit taking it, I had to learn self control all over again. I could cum in less than a minute. :o

im meeting with my doctor later next week to discuss a switch, i have just been trying to get as many opinions from others who have had similar experiences. both the shrink i was going to for a bit and my doctor (whom i have had nothing but great experiences with...i really trust him) had nothing but good things to say about paxil. it seems like everyone that gets on it gains weight though.

anyway, thanks.

Funny enough I was on Effexor also known as Venaflaxine I think.
It was a slow release oen and it worked very well.. In the UK tho i don't think it is a standard one prescribed by GP's, local Dr's. It has to be a Pschiatrist etc that prescribes this one. but it could be different where you are.

Yes, I used it for years and thought I was getting good effects. Perhaps I was. But, what to compare with? Nothing? Not really a choice for me. The weight gain for me was minimal and the other negative side effects I lived with.

I have switched to others, and in combination. But am going to modify those again after 6 months because they're not quite right.

Pharmacologically, each different drug--including the ones in the same family--has a slightly different effect on each person, at each dosage, and at different times. The "standards" are the result of lots of trials and then "averaging out" what seems to be best. But variation can be pretty wide for individuals. In short, what works for me could be completely awful for you.

My best advice: Give each change a good trial period, but don't "settle" for something that is "good enough." I did and I regret it now.

I was on Paxil for 3 months for social phobia and I didn't like it at all. The worst part for me was that I was tired all the time...I slept 12+ hours per night and didn't have very much energy. I also couldn't ejaculate for the 3 months that I was on it. I didn't gain any weight though which was good. Regarding the positive effects, it didn't have much of one...I felt more optimistic about things but that could have just been the placebo effect. Every drug works differently for different people though, so it wouldn't hurt to try it for a couple of months.

I was on Paxil for a year. I gained HUGE amounts of weight and even now a year later I still have issues taking weight off. I also wanted to sleep all the time and just could not be bothered with anything. It helped my anxiety and depression, but the side effects were too much for me. Coming off it was miserable, I had miserable headaches and was sick to my stomach for the 6 weeks it took me to get off of it. I did not get the "zaps" though, thank goodness.

I do want to say though, they did help me. I just used them to get over a really bad time in my life. I also went to therapy which helped a whole bunch. But that is what worked for me, you are going to be different. YMMV

Good luck!

Bupropion was good for me.. for the short while I took it. and I guess after, because I'm way better off now than I was before.

It did make my stomach hurt and I couldn't eat for a while after I took it, that was pretty annoying.

I'm currently on Bupropion (generic Wellbutrin) at 700mg per day and I notice a difference in my mood. It doesn't make me excited or super happy (as I'm not that type of personality anyway), just not as depressed as I was. A couple things that are benefits about it are that it makes you more horny as opposed to killing your sex drives like a lot of drugs can, and it's a bit of an appetite suppressant.

I did Paxil way back when and it absolutely killed my sex drive. It was almost impossible to orgasm. It was awful.

I also take Alprazolam (generic Xanax) at .5 to 1 mg situationally for anxiety and Citalopram (generic Celexa) at 10 mg per day for anxiety as well, even though apparently it's an anti-depressant as well. It's been great, no side effects.

Again, drugs effect people differently. Like 7Anthony5, I have taken Zoloft (Sertraline), 100mg. The delayed orgasm was a problem but it has sort of gone away. If I'm into the guy, I can have an orgasm. It helped me a lot with anxiety. It causes increased anxiety for the first few days of starting it, and when increasing the dosage.
