Hi Guys,
I have been on various anti-depressants for about 12 years. A few periods without, but the depression always returns. I am seeing a psychiatrist, depression runs deeply in my family. I have only been on SSRI's, SSNRI's and Wellbutrin. I am considering desipramine. Have any of you taken it with or without success? It is a trycyclic and released in 1964. As long as it works, lessens the lows and curbs the anxiety without causing weight gain I am interested. Most of the meds on the market today are decent, about 50% caused me to gain weight. I am thin by nature. I am currently on a combo of Cymbalta 60mgs/day and Wellbutrin XL 150mgs/day. It does not seem to be working like I think it should. Was on celexa for many, many years but eventually it petered out. Tried Lexapro but it did nothing. Anyway, long winded story. Just want any feedback on desipramine. I am going on vacation for 4 days and will be back after that. No computer! I think I will make it. Take care....randall:wave:

I've been on Lexapro/Celexa for a year. I also started Nortriptyline about a month ago. Those dosages seem pretty large. Try generic versions in smaller doses. The most I've ever done was 40mg of Celexa.

Its somewhat irrelevant what someones experiences with antidepressants are as its effectiveness patient to patient is not too consistent. I do know that the older tricyclics and the newer SSRIs and SNRIs have similar efficacy data in treating depression, just that the newer drugs side effects are usually milder. Doesn't mean that one of the older drugs won't work for you without any unwanted side effects, but they are more likely to.

If you like and trust your psychiatrist, s/he knows best. Bring it up next time you have an appointment.

thanks guys for responding. I trust my psychiatrist. Have a good one! Randall

At one time or another I think I was on everything new that came out, the doctors were more then double dipping with what i was on...and it landed me in the phyco ward. Took me off of everything but paxill and i did fine for about a yr. Then i got off of everything. note....the lack of being able to have sex on some of these is all to true...that in itself depressed me. One yr into sobriety, i was put on celexa,I guess dealing with something in life without booze was taking a toll. But it has been a yr. and it seems to work just fine......only draw back with this one is it make you horny....and with me thats discuss in another thread. Don't give up my friend trail and error takes time. Best of luck and have a great vacation. Fill us in when you return.

Hey Guys. The trip was great. Went to the Frio River in the Texas Hill Counrty. Now back in Houston and it is hot as hell (and that humid too). Again to all that responded, THANKS! And and all support makes any day a little bit better. Randall in Houston
