I'm not excusing him at all. But if he wants to, it still not too late to make amends.
Before you kick him to the curb, you should remember that Mr. Gary Davis comes from Mississippi which is probably the most anti-gay state in the U.S. (along with Alabama). There is a Southern Baptist church on every street corner. Imagine how alone he must have felt when he was trying to come to terms with his sexuality. Imagine how alone he must feel now -- given that that most Republicans in the Bible Belt will forgive theft or even heterosexual adultery, but they will not forgive homosexuality.
If he made that purchase at the gay sexual merchandise store and somehow (accidentally?) tried to bill the city for it, I'm pretty sure he has likely made other purchases at gay-oriented businesses or websites.
He even has probably browsed the "Just Us Boys" website...........maybe he will even read this thread!
Yes, what he did was horrible (both the anti-gay stuff and the misuse of city funds for his personal expenses). But we should still be compassionate to what he is going through in coming out.
How is it that you miss the main point more than half the time?
No one nailed this guy's feet to the floor and made him stay in the most anti-gay state on earth.
No one made the guy live as a closeted homo.
No one made him a hypocrite.
No one made him a dishonest, big spending politician.
He got there all on his own.
Given the opportunity to leave, he stayed. Given the choice, he decided to be a conservative Republican. Given the choice, he chose to be married. Given the choice, he undoubtedly cheated on his wife and his children. Given the choice, he chose to campaign on anti-homo 'pro-family', 'christian' values. Given the choice, he chose to cheat the citizens of his community.
What he apparently didn't have a choice in was being outed, although, I suspect, that if he didn't have the same kind of mild sociopathy that many politicians seem to have that makes them think they do not have to play by the same rules as the rest of the people around them, he wouldn't have been so stupid as to try to get the taxpayers to fund his purchases at a porn shop.
Why is it that he should be cut slack for all of this? Is it because he still espouses causes that you agree with, like guns and pro-life?
What kind of amends is he supposed to make now that don't sound false and forced? His personal life is so shabby at this point that he has no credibility to go out and talk to the Rotary Clubs to help encourage more homo rights. He has smeared all of us by making people think that he is just one more secretive, perverted sicko hiding out in their community.
So give three good reasons why he shouldn't get kicked to the curb by his fellow citizens, by his family and by the homos.
Or tell us what kind of amends that would adequately make up for the hurt that he has caused all of his victims.
