I have had anxiety since 1989. I took 1.5 mg of Xanax (Zan-axe) for it but Xanax is considered a 'dirty drug' by the College of Medicine (Canada) and my doctor and therapist had me come off of it. I had to go into the hospital because I couldnt come off of it myself. Its very addictive.

My doctor dont want to prescribe Xanax. He has given me Buspar for anxiety but it does nothing.

What do you take for anxiety? (I havent found an natural alternatives to be helpful, aka relaxation, etc)

I took Klonopin, aka Clonazepam, for some time.
I still have a stash I use on occasion if I feel a particularly contentious meeting coming up and I need to keep my cool.
In my experience it has zero side effects.

thanks for the input. I dont know if my doctor will allow this. Its either xanax or clonazepan and I think clonmazepan is closer to xanax that they would like to admit

Coincidentally a friend of mine was taking Alprazolam with good results.

I believe my dosage of Clonazepam was only 0.5 mg which I took only once a day in the morning.
After a time I split the tablets so took only half of that and, eventually, quit it almost entirely except for the occasions I mentioned above.
Ask your doctor.......Clonazepam is really inexpensive too.

Is CBD legal where you are? I get mine from American Shaman and it’s really helped me. I also still use my .5mg of Lorazepam (Ativan) as needed for the really bad anxiety and bad panic attacks. I’ve had a prescription for about 20 years now? There were times when I took a lot when I needed to, but there were also times when I took it and I realized I was probably taking too much and forced myself to not take any for say 2 weeks unless it was a severe panic attack so I could get off of it.

I tried CBD but i dont feel it worked for me.

I asked my doctor about Clonazepam but he wouldnt give it to me because Im taking Zopiclone for sleep.

I am never so anxious that I think medicating myself will do me any good. When my ex-'husband' and I traveled to Buenas Aires he talked an apothecary into selling us some Xanax, which I experimented with as sleep medication. My late boyfriend said I was convulsing violently in my sleep of those pills. Not that it prevented me from using them recreationally.

I understand doctors are against Xanax but it changed my life. When I was on it, I went to Vancouver, I worked, socialized etc. I would go back on it if I could but my doctor congratulated me on stop taking it so he isnt going to prescribe it to me again. I have thought of buying on the black market. I dont and I cant work right now because of my anxiety. But a xanax pill (1.5 mg) and I am ready to work.

Ive never been anti medication. Im open to whatever might work. But things have changed and I think pot ifs the next way for me to go but I dont like the smell and I am not sure if it works for me.

My life would be fine if my docto would just let me take xanax again

my stash . . .xanax.jpg (I do not have this stash. I took the photo while I was being prescribed Xanax

I would really like to know what alternatives people take to deal with anxiety

I can explain a physician's perspective on anxiety.

When patients say they have infrequent "anxiety attacks", medications of Ativan or Xanax have value to help when they're having a bad run of it. For example, if they're under a period of stress like a divorce or a job situation.

When patients are having frequent, situation anxiety, then it's more likely that they have a panic disorder. That requires a combination of therapy, like behavior modification or cognitive-behavioral therapy, supported by occasional pharmaceutical treatments. If you go that route- see a psychiatrist or a licensed therapist who specializes in patients with anxiety- and let the therapist determine the best treatment for you, then you're more likely to get a better outcome.

Thanks KaraBulut! I was not aware just what a panic disorder was. I'm thinking of a former very close friend that took Xanax for years and continued his weed addiction. He says he's always very depressed, has anxiety, and he does have panic attacks. He also has seizures that he says is related to his anxiety. The one or 2 anti-depressants he has tried made him physically sick.

We had a good friendship for 15 years but his mental situation got so bad. He was so paranoid about life, the world, and if something happened to him he always was the victim and everyone was out to get him. He used me to vent. His yelling and pounding of his fists when he was upset just became to toxic for me. We are still "friends" but never socialize anymore. He has never attempted to get any counseling, just medication from a medical practitioner. He needs a lot of counseling!

My impression is that an anxiety attack is a less serious condition and a panic attack is a ramped up version of an anxiety attack. The fight or flight response is in effect.
I didnt get any anxiety medications from either doctor. what is there? benzos are out. Im considering edible marijuana because it is the current rage among housewives just wanting to take off the edge which is basically what I want. I do get a big anxeity attack but try to remind myself its not that bad and it will subside but man, Xanax was so much easier. Id take a Valium if theyd let me

The difference between an anxiety and a panic attack is night and day.
Anxiety is mostly an unexplainable uneasiness or nervousness.
A panic attack is terror.......

Meditation and learning coping skills would help

I havent done meditation but I went through an anxiety group, complete with workbook, and I didnt find that skills helped me. I always think they will help others but not me.

Hell, I had ECT and every session there was someone else there having shock therapy. I asked how its going and it would help them but Ive had 6 sessions and 12 sessions and I dont feel it helped me

Even my insomnia, my doctor said I was an enigma because nothing worked on me that usually works on others. He resorted to giving me sleeping pills but I have to take two. One is not enough (along with Valerian Root)

Im just fucked lol

Lexapro works great for me and is not a benzodiazapine. Benzo's are physically and mentally addictive and require higher and higher doses to be effective....and I believe withdrawals can be deadly.

There's two different things that are being discussed because ECT is used for medication-resistant depressive disorder. Unfortunately, many of the drugs for depression can increase anxiety; many of the drugs for anxiety can worsen depression.

The question is which is the actual diagnosis that your need treatment for? There are some new medication options that are in trial for resistant depression that don't increase anxiety and those might be an option for you if your underlying diagnosis is depression.

I'm on 20 mg of Escitalopram for depression and anxiety. I also suffer from chronic adjustment disorder.

Watch out for Benzo's like xanax. If you take them all the time your tolerance will actually make the anxiety much worse in the mid and long-term.

Coming off benzos is nuts. Withdrawal can trigger deadly seizures. Very heavy anxiety, paranoia, and psychosis are not uncommon during the first months. Then comes the depression a year or so out. All the while you're craving them and you'll likely never return to 'normal'. Most people will need a maintenance dose for their entire lives.

Benzos are way worse than opioids or alcohol. There's no way to take the edge off withdrawal and they become useless for anxiety after a couple of years.
