Who else here enjoys the topic of cars? Regardless of your knowledge. Styling, powertrain, quality, etc. What's your favorite automaker and I suppose we shall start from there! :D

I think that we ALL like cars to SOME degree...

UNFORTUNATELY, I'm kind of a utilitarian and drive a pick up truck -- because I need one...

FORTUNATELY, my father was a big wig at Chrysler -- so I get REALLY GOOD PRICES automatically -- and DON'T have to HAGGLE -- on buying cars...

The VW Beetle was SO EASY to WORK ON (I even helped rebuild an engine when I was in high school) -- that I'm kind of partial to them -- even though they're not around as much...

So...

Let's see...

The NEW CARS are WAY TOO COMPLICATED for me...

I'll go with the late 60's Ford Mustang as my favorite!!! ..|

And -- OF COURSE the 1966 model which is WAY TOO HARD to FIND...

:):):)

Great! I mean I never really was a fan of Chrysler to begin with [no offense] due to the quality of the vehicles I have been around [Neon, Grand Caravan, Cirrus/Stratus and the New Yorker] but I see that they are beginning to improve. Though I must say I wouldn't mind a Chrysler if I receieved one at a steep discount. :D

As for new cars, I love them so much more. I suppose I am fascinated with seeing new technology and how cars these days make so much power with so little. I think my FAVORITE [engine] technology of today is direct injection [not a sexual innuendo:badgrin:]; even though it's not new stuff, it's amazing what such a simple change can do!

I'm guessing you drive a Dodge Ram?

I love going to car shows and stuff, but I don't know a thing about them beside how to drive one.

I do need to learn some stuff though I may be buying me a new one within a year and a half.

Nope -- the Dakota...

(opinterph polished it up for a camping trip!!!)

Its closing in on being 10 years old -- with NO PROBLEMS!!! ..|

I'll probably replace it with the Ram -- when it comes to that point -- but it's been a GREAT TRUCK for A LOT OF YEARS!!!

My father was a VP of Engineering for them -- and ODDLY ENOUGH really didn't have much to do with product development -- HIS job was to build the factories to make the cars...

He passed away in 1970 -- so don't blame him for the Neon...

We DO get STEEP discounts -- but its not ALWAYS available -- my mother is able to get ONLY TWO codes PER year -- and I have 9 brothers and sisters and then all of THEIR kids FIGHT over them -- so she delegates the two codes as best she can...

Mechanic of 12 years here

I love cars. I sometimes like to watch car porn

As for my favourite make, it's difficult to say. I was a BMW man for years, but not so much anymore. One thing's been constant, though: since I've started driving, I've always owned a Saab. I think each make has something unique to offer.

My dream car: 1969 Jaguar E-Type convertible (red or british racing green - I haven't decided)

Oh, in '08 a guy bought NOS parts for a 74 E-Type and built one, "new."

Fuckin' sweet if you ask me.

Yes. Big time. I love cars, own collector cars. Attend auto shows, both new car and classic cars. I was born with a model car in my hand. Collect diecast cars and car brochures. I'm an automotive journalist. That's how much I like cars.

Count me in !! I go to the Chicago Auto Show and my partner and I collect die cast models - I'd guess we have 75 or so! LOVE the new Jaguar XJ but my dream car has always been a 1957 Chevy Bel Air (!)(!)(!)(!)

I like cars.

In high school, in 1983, I restored a 1963 VW bug to mint condition. Rebuilt the engine, did lots of bodywork, fixed rust, painted it, replaced the carpet and upholstery. It was quite a project, and I had fun with it.

I don't really work on cars much anymore. I get underneath and make sure the mechanics did everything right, but aside from that, I rely on the experts nowadays.

I'd love to have a pristine 1983 VW GTI. The original "pocket rocket". They're probably kinda slow by today's standards, but in the early 80s they were really zippy in comparison.

I would LOVE to have ANY GTi or ANY hot hatch for that matter. I really like the current GTi, although VW needs to step it up with their TFSI 2.0 flat-4. Even though it makes 200 HP [211 in the Audis] and a healthy 258 lb-ft of torque, it likes premium fuel a lot as it "only" gets 30 MPG hwy, which pretty much defeats the purpose of DI. Ford's Ecoboost 2.0 makes 247 and Hyundai's Theta II GTDI makes 274 while getting better mileage. Now I'm not saying it's a bad engine, it's far from it, but it's expected as it was definitely one of the earlier implementations of GTDI. Whatever the case the GTi is ALWAYS a winner in my book. My only worry is if VW goes down market and boring in the next gen like they've done with the Jetta and Passat.

Give me a Honda any day. They make good cars and great bikes. I'm saving up for my CBR 1000. And I love everything they in motor sports.

Yes! I love cars! I believe I'm on number 49 or something close to that. Favorite manufacture is GM. I currently drive an Escalade ESV and hade a Yukon before that. In fact I just got the Escalade about a month ago. Have had several Saab's, Audi's and VW's. Also, have had Nissan, Honda, Toyota, BMW, Ford and a Mazda. My partner bought me a Triple White 1979 VW Beetle Vert two years ago when I turned 40. I had wanted that car since I was 14. She is only driven on nice days.

Very excited about this thread! I caused me to stop lurking and join!!

^Hi slade!!!

WELCOME to JUB!!! ..|

I'm SURE that you're going to like it here... :D

Any pictures of that Beetle that you could upload and share???

Sounds like an AWESOME car!!!

Not to mention the COOL backstory!!!

Mechanic for many years on various things, cars, trucks, tractors, lawnmowers, etc.

Toyota is my favorite brand. I've owned 3, soon to be 4. Subaru is 2nd favorite. I fell out with domestic cars years ago.

As far as powertrain, I prefer rear wheel or 4 wheel/ all wheel drive. I have no use for a V6, and have never owned one, nor have I owned front wheel drive. I prefer an inline 6, boxer 4, or inline 4. V8 is okay, except for diesel, I refuse to own a V8 diesel. The boxer 4 runs smoothly without balance shafts, and sits in the frame longitudinally, making it much easier to work on.

I've mostly owned pickups. Out here in the mountains, in the boonies, it's hard to get by without a pickup, and 4wd is a good idea too. If I didn't need a pickup, I'd just have a small car. Pickups take too much fuel, and are unwieldy, but if you can only afford one vehicle, a pickup is it for me in this area. I have a Toyota Tacoma on order, 4cyl, 4x4, reg cab, 5spd manual. I'm getting rid of the 2 vehicles I have now, and will come out money ahead. I hate to part with my Subaru, it drives, and handles like a dream, and has plenty of power, but I can no longer afford 2 vehicles. I don't mind parting with my current 2wd Toyota pickup, the new one will perform similarly. I can haul, tow, go in bad weather, and still have decent maneuverability, plus livable fuel mileage with this small pickup. The only 2 choices were Toyota or GM. Nobody else makes a 4x4, reg cab, 4cyl pickup now. Mazda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, and Isuzu are all clones of Ford, Dodge, Nissan, and GM. I fell out with GM years ago, worked on too much of their junk...

I agree on the direct injection. Unfortunately, we won't see that much of it here in it's best form (stratified combustion) like a diesel, but with spark ignition, and gasoline or ethanol for fuel. Not until something changes, anyway, due to the communistic, idiotic, overbearing EPA. The U.S. government cars not about the environment, or fuel economy, it's all about money, and power, and oppression...

I have always loved Honda and Acura products. I've had numerous models by both makes through the years. I rarely keep a car more than 2 or 3 years. Currently driving an '08 Acura TL that I dearly love.

The performance gains are there with stratified injection. However, with that there is no gas cleaning-off intake valves. I have seen problems, especially with Audi, excessive carbon build-up on the intake valves. THe oil vapour instantly stick to the hot valves. It gets so bad that there are cold-start misfires until the goo heats-up and the valve seals. Audi's solution: desensitize the ECM so it doesn't detect the cold-start misfire and set the MIL.

Last October I bought a hybrid. I love the economy and its driving characteristics; but the engine compartment is a horror. I used to like doing minor things to my cars, change oil, plugs, belts, clean the carburetor, etc.

But this thing might as well be totally solid-state. I can't do anything to it except put gas in the tank and air in the tires.

I miss the idea that I could repair the thing with a wrench, even though that hasn't really been possible for a while.
