Any good news this month?

I've been avoiding the news lately because it seems like NOTHING good is happening. It's so depressing to hear each week how America is getting worse, particularly because the GOP sucks the teet of the wealthy and big business, while consistently fucking over the poor and middle class.

So this thread is about GOOD news. Feel free to post and discuss anything positive you've heard or read in the news recently.

I'll start: I'm glad that President Obama announced the troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. Even though some are criticizing this decision, I think it's a step in the right direction.

Well there was no vote on gay marriage in New York, so the measure is not dead yet.

I rescued two dozen pine seedlings from a landscaping effort and planted them at my conservation and safety project. And donations from JUB for that project have reached five hundred dollars (please add to it!).

US economic growth is revised upwards

The US economy grew at an annualised rate of 1.9% in the first three months of the year, slightly faster than previously thought, official figures have shown.

It needs to grow at 3 percent quarterly or better to start producing entrance level jobs.

This was foreseen and that's why the stimulus package added jobs through gov't hiring until the recession had passed. Unfortunately the GOP is cutting all of those programs.

When Clinton got the unemployment rate down to 5.5 he had 3.6 percent growth in the economy.

its good news but it needs to be better. The nation needs some sort of a jobs bill out of the house of reps.

In Singapore we had 10,000 people show up for the PinkDot event supporting gay rights. The first year in 2009 there were 2,500 people who showed up, last year almost 5,000, so each year the event doubles in size. Event planners are trying to plan for 20,000 next year!
