Are there medically sound products used to disinfect sex toys from bacteria and viruses? I know that soap and hot water and sometimes boiling toys is recommended. But are there disinfectant products safe for sex toys to reduce possible STIs between partners sharing toys?

It depends on the material that the toy is made of.

With the exception of rubber, vinyl, leather or any toy with a battery, most toys are dishwasher safe. If you don't want to run them through the dishwasher, soap/water or diluted bleach is usually adequate enough to kill most STIs.

For rubber toy, the best solution is to use a condom over the toy since the porous surface of rubber tends to be difficult to clean.

If you have to share toys use condoms on them, then afterward put them into a mixture of bleach and water, and let them air dry.

I did this with vibrators I had used on men I dated.

Yes I do use condoms on toys but cleaning is still a must. Is there general rule how long they have to be in soapy water to be considered disinfected? Doesn't bleach or alcohol damage rubber or silicone materials?

Bleach is always a scary word to me. Lover's Lane sells adult toy cleaner it comes in a spray for only about 9.99. I use it on my dildo After I wash it with hot water and some mild liquid hand soap you spray it all over and let it sit for 30 seconds then rinse again.

Have you tried the dishwasher? The heated dry cycle will surely kill bacteria. And if the dishwasher is good enough to clean utensils you put into your mouth, then surely it can get your sex toys clean enough to stick in your butt. . . if you insist on doing that kind of thing.

If it's silicone, metal or glass you can clean it in any number of ways. Boiling, dishwasher, soapy water, bleach dilution, etc.

If it's any kind of rubber, soapy water, bleach dilution.

If it's one of those "realistic touch" ones that you have to dust with cornstarch, soapy water.

All to be air dried.

Cleaning sex toys is essential but as a rule after a dildo is really discoloured I get rid of it. It's just gross tho actually clean.
