I hear that quicktime pro is good and I have used that.

But that's only for AVI files.

When I was blind and confused with using windows. I would use Total Video Converter. I gotta say it wasn't that bad.

It could convert even .OGG files. And all into MP4 or some other files.

Not only that. But it could rip the audio out of video files. Really useful. And even merge files. But because I made the switch lots of the programs I used to use won't work anymore even though I have bootcamp because I need to pay for the stupid codes again. I actually liked the ringtone maker for iPhone. Unlike the free ones you could make it longer then 30 seconds. But anyways...

I know how powerful the mac is and I know there has to be some really good video converters. I will say one video converter that I hate alot is PSPVideo. I hate the whole GUI and Interface of it. And it just really sucks and is icky. But I know alot of people will use it. Nullriver isn't pretty bad. Of course I shouldn't be so quick to judge since I am using mac now.

Oh yeah and this is mostly to convert stuff to iPhone quality. Although I can easily change the size, video, and quality with most converting programs.

I have found these so far.

Xilisoft Video Converter for Mac

http://www.xilisoft.com/video-converter-mac.html

It doesn't look too bad.

Video Converter for Mac OSX

That I wish had pictures.

Mac Video Converter

http://macvideoconverter.mac-dvd.com/

That one doesn't look too bad either. Looks pretty simple enough to use.

4Media Video Converter for Mac

For some reason that one interests me the most and looks really good. Some of these have trials so I can just try that too.

But yeah. Does anyone know which of these are good or know any good ones?

I don't mind paying for one if it works well. But of course free is nice :D

Quicktime pro works just fine for me for all these conversions. Yoy can also use VLC player see PM.

Damn. All the mac guys I know say they only use quicktime pro. There has to be some secret to it.

But I gotta say.

4Media Video Converter works great.

It's expensive though. But i've tested it on a few files.

The only problem is for the trial.

For videos it won't convert anything that is past 5 minutes. Meaning only 5 minutes of a video.

And you can't do alot of cropping or file joining with the trial. But no watermarks at least. And for audio. If a file is less then 5 minutes then it will do it half of what that file is.

But if you do something is 5:01 or 5:05

Then you basically have the whole thing :D

I am considering getting it. But I'll check out the others and that quicktime thing.

Quicktime Pro is great - I use it every day.

Make sure you install the free Flip4Mac and Perian to expand the codecs accessible to Quicktime. If you need to convert TO Windows Media formats, you'll need a higher level Flip4Mac plugin that will cost a small amount.

But all of these add-ons work within Quicktime Pro.

For more professional control, the Flip4Mac people make a complete conversion application called Episode which is absolutely awesome, but very expensive.

Apple's own Compressor, bundled with Final Cut Studio, is also a pro-level conversion tool, but the bundle is also expensive.

If you're converting direct from DVD, Handbrake is free, absolutely awesome, removes copy protection, and has plenty of presets for iPods etc.

I donno. I still really like 4media video converter.

But it seems for now ffmpegx is free.

I don't think you gotta pay the 15. I can get over the start up message.

I'll use ffmpegx for now. But I wanna work up to 4Media

So that's why it's not working. Damn. Alot of money for a plug in.

I have both Perian and flip4mac. But now I know the problem. Aw damn.

Episode sounds good. I guess I can't complain about others out there since Episode seems to be the most expensive one..

Yeah I use handbrake for dvd's. And I love it. But not everything is on a DVD :(

The basic Flip4Mac WM encoder is 29 bucks, and probably does most of what you will ever need - you're just locked to presets.

Most of the stuff you mentioned in your original post - convert for iPhone, rip audio from video, etc - should be perfectly doable with nothing but Quicktime Pro. You can convert any MP3 into an iPhone ringtone using GarageBand.

Wait?

What the hell?

Are you serious?

That's awesome. I'm so glad I have garageband. I should start using that more. I know I can use my Rock Band Accesories with it.

I'll have to think about the WM encoder. I did go ahead and buy the 4Media MP4 Converter. IT WORKS GREAT. It was on sale to.

But thank you. I will try to use Garage Band more.

I love my mac :D

Handbrake is good but it only converts dvd's not files.

Oh and the Keynote is now available for free on iTunes. Yay.

thanks.

QT Pro + Perian handles pretty much every format you're likely to need except WMV and the Xiph.org (i.e. .ogg) formats - and there's a free component available from Xiph that handles those.

WMV is trickier - flip4mac kinda works if you're prepared to shell out the thirty bucks, but as Unclean said, it can cause compatibility problems. It's good enough for what I need it for though, and I just disable it if i have trouble. That's what comes of trying to use an M$ product on a well-designed OS.
