Hey guys, I was wondering what's the best way to play import games from Japan? I have just gotten into the Super Robot Taisen series (I'm a huge mecha geek) but most of those games have only been released in Japan, with a low probability of them ever reaching US shores.

I am seriously considering importing these games, but what's the best way to do this without buying a Japanese system (PS2 and PS1) or having to modify my system? I have heard that there are boot disks, but some sources say that these can damage your system. I not sure about any of this. Is there some way to do it? I'd appreciate any help...

Probably in the wrong forum yeab but no biggie, it can be moved if so.

I know what you mean about JSS Effortless. (It's so weird we each imported the exact same games, lol) Anyway, I just got JUS and it's easier to unlock everything with the giude I used but not knowing which characters come from which manga in Japanese is hard to figure out sometimes.

I've requested to have this thread moved, thanks for helping me figure that one out, you two.:-)

My question is more about the technical part though. The DS is regionally universal, so you can play games from Japan on it the way it is, but the Playstation and PS2 games have regional locks on them (I'm in the US), so you either have to modify your system, or buy a Japanese system in order to play imports. I was just wondering if there was some reliable way other than those two options to play imported games.

As I said, I read on some site that boot disks can be used, but is it true that they can damage your system(i.e. shorten it's life span) or is that just crap rumors from the web?

Hey! There's this place that sells boot discs for imports... I have them somewhere, so I'll look up the URL for you when I find the discs. I will warn you, however, that you need to remove the front plate of your PS2's disc holder in order to use it. Unfortunately, short of dropping the $300 for a Japanese system or the $180 + labor for a mod chip, that's really the only way.

Have you checked Play Asia to see what they have? They may seem a touch pricey at a glance, but they're just downright cheap with a lot of stuff and sell importing solutions.

Does that apply even if I have the slim ps2 with the flip top? That's the one I have.

Yeah, I checked play-asia and in fact that's where I was going to import from lol! Thanks Taiga!

I'm thinking I'm just gonna invest in either a mod chip or Japanese system...or perhaps just forget the whole thing.

After reading some other sources, it seems like it requires you to do terrible things to your system (*gasp*) I don't wanna break it/otherwise muck my system up lol

Plus, I can always import Super Robot Taisen W for the DS. Thankfully the DS doesn't have all these issues.

Nintendo was smart enough to make its hand-held games universal... now if only everyone would wise up and make the systems/games universal too..

FYI, my Japanese PS2 works wonderfully. If you have questions, feel free to ask. :)

Thanks, Taigastar, I will!:)

I hope this doesn't make me sound nerdy but I went to play-asia.com looking for a japanese ps2, and I saw the Ceramic White system...it was GORGEOUS! Wow I want that one.

I got the Sakura Pink one. It was less expensive. The Aqua Blue one was absolutely gorgeous too. Gotta love the limited editions.
