Any other UK guys in university at the moment?

Doing the clubbing thing in the first year is a good idea. I didn't at all and sometimes now just find myself wishing I could go on a decent night out but then I remember that my life is now confined to nothing but the library.

I'm part of the LGBTQ society. I've been to one event in 3 years. I'm too scared to go along to any of their events. Is that sad? !oops!

I'm part of the Ancient History and Archaeology society, the ballroom and latin american dance team and the poker society.

What about you?

The library is pretty cool though, not gonna lie but i'm still impressed with it. I mean when I actually can use a PC or get out a core textbook I need. i'm actually looking forward to the experience of staying overnight to complete an essay but then just falling asleep lol

ah right, I was thinking of joining the LGBTQ society but I don't think i'll fit in since i'm still new to being gay and stuff. I don't really feel like I would fit in or involve myself with them. but i'd love to meet other people who are in the same situation as me, so maybe I should.

I didn't even know there was a ballroom and latin dance team, sounds fun.

i'm part of film society and a bunch that i've signed up for but haven't gone to yet. but I heard there's a refreshers fair in January so i'm definitely going to sign up to more societies and actually go to them.

Yes, there is refreshers fair in January, mainly because of the new intake of international students that will be arriving at the uni. Societies are good fun. They've kept me sane over the years.

Perhaps we should try braving the LGBTQ society together. I know some of the committee members so I'm just worried that it will look really worried if I start turning up now after only having been to one event of their's during my time at uni.

I'm glad you are impressed by the library coz I'm not. It's not big enough for the number of people that use it. But I'm a librarian at heart so I'll always be critical of it and think there are ways it can be improved.

You say that you are looking forward to pulling an all nighter in the library. You won't be when you actually have to do it :p

will everyone be able to go to refreshers then? I didn't know they mainly did it again due to more internationals

yeah man, i'll think about it. I do know some people who go there, but I heard there was a fight going on with some of the committee members and that someone has been kicked out. I dunno the whole story though, I just picked that up from what one of my friends was posting on the LGBTQ wall.

oh, i'm impressed with the library when what I want to happen goes well. but I couldn't agree more, the library is too small for the amount of students they're bringing in. you know that my course is only supposed to have an intake of 60 but this year it's nearly at 80, it's ridiculous especially since 70% of them are internationals from China or Hong Kong...

haha, it'll be an experience alright. I just want to see what the fuzz is about :P

It's really not that exciting. The library is just very quiet at night. Trust me, it's quite boring and depressing when you are there coz you just need to get work done.

I'm fairly sure refreshers fair is open to everyone but just that it is primarily aimed at international students.

Indeed, there is drama going on within the LGBTQ society. Jack, one of the two co-chairs has been kicked off the committee for comments he made about some of the members and for trying to undermine the society as a whole, apparently. But things should have cooled down over Christmas and I'm sure things will largely have returned to normal once everyone returns from the holidays.

wow, there's some drama going on over there. so is this Jack guy being a dick or is there more to the story behind the scenes?

I was just thinking...small world man. small world. would have never guessed that I would have met someone else from Leicester, let alone Leicester Uni haha

Well, I'm not originally from Leicester but I get your point. And yes, it's certainly nice to meet someone else from uni on here.

I'm not sure whether there is more to it with Jack. I guess if I showed up to more things then I would know more of what is going on.

yeah, I only know one other gay guy but he doesn't know that i'm gay as well

Jeez guys get a room, but seriously it's great that you guys have so much in common.
Luckily i'm from Edinburgh so can just travel in from my home.

haha i'm so sorry. feel free to join in about anything whenever. you're part of your universities LGBT society right? how is that?

No never joined, place was full of poofs, no i had a few friends before i started Uni so didn't really go seeking more out.

ahhh fair enough. i'm not a fan of really effeminate gay guys either, but saying that I don't really know any so eh...did you know them from school/college?

One from school and i was on the scene from the age of 16, so i had a few that i met in the clubs and bars who i hung around with all the time, the bit about the poofs was just a joke i never bothered to check the place out at all.

oh right

do you still go clubbing or to bars?

Not nearly as often as i used to, just hang out with friends around the house or go somewhere in town for dinner, how about you ?

yeah, a couple times a week with my friends. but next term I might have to slow down because it's costing me too much. I haven't been to any gay bars/clubs though, I will do when I can find people who are willing to go.

So you haven't been to places like the rainbow and dove or helsinki? It's worth being a member of the LGBTQ society if you do coz the membership card gets you decent discounts at pretty much all the gay places in Leicester.

Helsinki is the main gay club in Leicester right? i've heard that name a lot

and maybe I should then. but i'm really scared of joining up haha. how much does it normally cost for entry without the membership card? which is the best club? when does the LGBT society normally go out?

Helsinki is indeed Leicester's gay nightclub. All the other gay venues in Leicester are bars or pubs. I'm not sure how much Helsinki normally costs but with membership it is either £1 entry or free entry depending on what night it is. Also all cocktails at the Rainbow and Dove are half price. And it also gets you 10% off in Sloanes. There's a couple of other things as well that I can't remember.

The society have big drinks socials periodically, usually on a wednesday, thursday or a friday. Checking their facebook page is the best way to keep up with that kind of thing.

with the membership card? damn that's extremely cheap. that is value for money and i'm really low on that. sounds like it'll be good for some nights out.

thanks for the heads up, i'll check out the facebook page

Yes, it is extremely good value for money if you play on going to any gay places. One night out and you'll probably have made your money back already.

bring it back onto topic slightly :P
