I've tried them all. Nothing seems to work on alleviating cold / flu symptoms, except for time. My doctor prescribed Fluticasone Propionate for nasal congestion. It did absolutely nothing except made me $52 poorer for a thimble-size container of it (16g by weight). He also said to take Loratadine (Claritin) which had no effect. This was in the fall and it went away by itself. Now with my current episode, I bought some Suphedrine, no effect either. I tried a mega dose of Vit C (3g) and it didn't help either but for only a couple of days so maybe it needed more of a chance to work.

What works for you guys?

Fresh garlic. A clove, or two works wonders for me. Also helps to lower my blood pressure after spending a little time on the politics forum.

The drugs your MD prescribed work great for allergies. They're a waste of money when it comes to colds and flu.

Your mother had the best treatment for colds and flu-
  1. Rest
  2. Good nutrition
  3. Comfort messures like throat lozenges, anti-fever meds, menthols rubs, nasal rinses, etc.

The only drugs that help are the ones that help you sleep at night and for that Theraflu Nighttime or Nyquil will usually do the trick.

I use zinc lozenges at the first symptoms of a cold. Take Tylenol for the aches. Drink a hot toddy with a shot or two of whiskey in it, then sweat it out in bed. I am better the next day.

How long would it take without zicam and niquil?

My guess, 3 or 4 days.

Probably but the days and nights go a lot faster with the Nyquil. :)

The stupid FDA took what worked off the market because it had a mild apatite depressant effect and was also used in OTC diet pills. Idiot females trying to lose weight mega-dosed on it for months at a time and a few of them had strokes due to the excessive high dosage. So now all of us who need it for colds and allergies and used it properly, are screwed. Yes, I'm still pissed out it.

If you want a good herbal remedy, try the following recipe. I made it up for myself and my boyfriend, and we both had bad colds. Cleared them up in about a week's time.

We took a shot glass of the stuff twice a day and damn, it cleared everything up right quick. I do suggest using Jalapeno or Habenero peppers, but if you can get something hotter, and can tolerate it, go for it. Just use it minimally... We learned that the hard way.... >.>
