I had Yerba Mate served with orange juice in Buenos Aires; I didn't like it at all! People talk about it as the best thing ever and I just don't understand the hype. Maybe, I just have a funny palate?

Now, I'm hearing about rooibos tea from South Africa. Is has to be better than Yerba Mate? Yes? No?

I bought some Yerba Mate to try and I don't really like it.

Have you ever tried white tea? It's the shit.

The white tea that I have tried almost has too delicate of a flavor for me to enjoy. Maybe I didn't make it properly...

Do they have a sugar-less version?

I never tried it, or even recall seeing it, but yes

You won't find it most places, but if there is a large Latin community or store around they may have it. I think even the local Walmart Market carries it in their international section.

Also for those that don't know, Mate is pronounced in English like matay, or like it rhymes with the Japanese pronounciation of karate.

I usually don't share. I have my own cup too (well several). I really got into Argentinean cultural when I lived there... I still miss Argentina... I felt a lot in common with people there. I am Spanish with some Italian roots... so that's why. Mate I got hooked on there... I don't really drink it so much anymore here in LA.

Well, everyone was Spanish and Italian there even though it was obvious that they weren't Spanish and Italian, but that's another story for another thread.

Outside of that I lived like a king in Buenos Aires and Calafate.

Rooibos is good. It has a kind of sweet flavor to it.

My Granddad made me a Redbush (Rooibos) Tea about a year ago, now that is the only tea i will usually drink. The flavour is so much nicer then normal tea.

Thanks

I got to like Yerba Mate many years ago when travelling in S.America. It is quite bitter, but I don't mind those types of flavours, and I still drink it now. Also have my original gourd and bombilla bought in Argentina.

Oh gawd. I just went to Whole Foods and purchased a cup of its organic coffee and yerba mate. I could smell the mate on the drive home and it smelled like someone threw grass into a pot of boiling water. Are they making it wrong or is this the way it's supposed to smell? Plus, everyone online adds no sweetener to it. Drink it raw?

If you don't mind me asking, what is your nationality? If you're South African, how popular is Redbush? Are there really diet/weight loss implication for this? How much does it cost there?

Thanks.

^Rooibos is very big down here. Most of the people I know who drink it prefer it to regular/Ceylon tea.

I am not a fan, being a big coffee lover. I can do Ceylon tea, but I need to be in a really different mood for Rooibos. Having said that, they are doing a variety of other things with it. Using it in sauces and meat marinades is becoming more and more popular; additionally, they do the Red Espresso, which is exactly what it sounds like - finely ground rooibos packed into an espresso machine and made into one. And they do a good iced Rooibos Tea in a can, for those who like Iced Tea.

^^^ cool. I thought that rooibos was just another western fad, like acai berry.

Thanks for informing me.

I started drinking Rooibos tea because I fell in love with the HBO series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency which is set in Botswana but the main character drinks a lot of bush tea.

I enjoy Mate.. had it for the first time in Brazil 5-6 years ago. Rooibos is nice, too. I prefer "green" or unfermented rooibos.. much healthier than the regular stuff.

As nice as both of these teas are, they pale in comparison to gynostemma (aka, jiaogulan) when it comes to health benefits
