Anyone interested in a non-gaytypical music discusion

..| Man, I saw them last month! Excellent show! I love their cool mix of 1960s psychedelia with the harder sound of bands like Tool. The first time I heard them was in Chicago a few years ago. My friends and I lit up the ol' bong and headed out to a cool place called The Lava Lounge. :gogirl:

I saw them in Cleveland in October, and they absolutely blew my mind. It took me a good week to get the "omgporcupinetreeisamazing" phase out of my system.

But they are anyways.

Thats right. Brian May deserves so much more credit then those that aren't guitarist,/musician will likely understand.
Playing his `Red Special' guitar with passion that you can sometimes hear it speak.
I saw Queen when I was about 10 and what a good show . I think it was the Hot Spaces Tour? That album sucked "Calling all boys, calling all girls"..... but he had a powerful voice that never missed a note. Okay it was the Bowie one with Under Pressure but that wasn't the first single released. Actually it was a okay album, but soon I wouldn't be interested in Queen's style.
However its one of the few things I remember directly when I was 10 or so. Seeing Queen. So many shows I don't remember and some I've seen within the last year.

Brian May is highly underrated as a guitarist. Everyone always gushes over Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton and the others, but May brought a virtuosity to his playing that was quite amazing, and he was a brilliant songwriter as well, so much so that his best pieces beat nearly anything of anyone else in the band, unfortunately those songs tend to get buried in the massive Queen catalog. Also, the songs from Hot Space, which were pretty crappy on the album, were much better live. I posted their performance of 'Back Chat' in the Queen thread, and it was one the best from the 'On Fire' concert.

Guys! Don't forget that Joan Jett has a recent album (2006) out called "Sinner" and it kicks rock and roll ass!

Wow... I thought I was the only person who owned Letters Never Sent.

Yeah, there weren't too many of us who purchased that release, I believe it peaked at #95. But when it comes to Carly, we all know that it's about quality not quantity. I really do think it's way up there in the Top 5 of Carly releases. My personal favorite is "The Reason."

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely purchase it. Yeah, my moniker is from the movie. :-)

Cool! That was one freaked out movie, I only watched it once (1988?), but I have never forgotten about it. I think I'll have to watch it again sometime soon.

I hope you enjoy "Letters Never Sent" when you get around to purchasing it, it'll be worth it!

cool thread, always nice to "meet" other gay rockers. I myself am from the Classic Rock era, top favorites being Led Zeppelin, Queen, Yes, Heart, Pink Floyd, things like that. I watched Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette this week which made me dig out of Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow CDs, though in the early 80s my main bands were Talking Heads, The Clash, Blondie, Joy Division, Patti Smith Group, Roxy Music, things like that. Late 80s I was into some metal acts, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, The Cult. 90s bands that have given me a thrill: Pearl Jam, the Black Crowes. These days Ive been listening to some spectacular Eurometal bands from Finland, Sonata Arctica and Nightwish, that mind blowing trio from down under Wolfmother, plus some fun Indie bands like Of Montreal and De Novo Dahl. Last concert: The Cult at Bogarts in November 2007. Bands most seen (all tied for twice) Queen, Black Crowes, Cheap Trick, Yes. Dont own anything by Madonna or Cher, never have, never will, and I wouldnt know a Britney Spears of Christina Aqualleria song if one fell on me. :=D:

as Jeff Beck said, Brian May is The Governor. Much is always made of Jimmy Page's guitar army, but May is the one who can do the same thing in a variety of styles (listen to the mulitple overdubs in "Good Company") but can actually do the same thing live in concert. I think he is often over looked because the majority of his playing is within the confines of a standard 3 to 5 minute pop song, but listening to performances of "If You Can't Beat Them" from the Jazz tour from several different performances demonstrates how night after night he can pull off a quick yet totally unique-every-time pop solo...and then there are the early metal-esque numbers "Doin Alright" "Ogre Battle" "White Queen" and the meandering versions of "Brighton Rock" ...yep, he's the Governor!

thanks for the memories!

anyone obsessed with of montreal like I am?

and we should re-bring up hardcore and grindcore in this thread haha... although we shouldn't exclude limp wrist from that even though they'd be quite "gaytypical" from any other standpoint!

I love the first Pretenders album. It's so diverse, and yet there's nary a bad track in the bunch. "Tattooed Love Boys" really blows me away. It's in 7/4, and how Martin Chambers gets through the thing without passing out is totally beyond me.

The second album? Not so much. It's certainly not bad, and it has definite highlights - "Message of Love", "Talk of the Town" - but it doesn't come close to the first.

I can't say I know much about Of Montreal, but I have hung out with Rob from Apples in Stereo. Do I get cool points? :)

I wouldnt use the word obsessed. Highly impressed is more like it. Having grown up listening to most of the bands that Kevin Barnes is influenced by he's not doing anything new (to my ears at least) My kid sister turned me on to them about two years ago, and last spring we got to see them at the Southgate House in beautiful downtown Newport Kentucky. The whole show was such a spectacle! and I had a sonic orgasm when they played for the encore not one but two Stardust/Bowie numbers, Starman and Hang on to Yourself! Though there are MANY, I'd have to say My British Tour Diary is my top fav since I can sing all the lyrics in the right place with the right beats which is no mean feat for an old geezer like me.
