How did we get by

I'm setting up a linux box on an old PC I haven't used in 2+ yrs.

It had win98 on it... I played around a bit on it and got the dreaded BSD twice in 30 minutes.

I was surprised windows even loaded after so much down time.

I'm not, and I am very thankful that is the case. And it only took Microsoft two more years to come up with a kick ass OS, Windows 2000.

What are you going to use this machine for?
I've got an older box (built from spare and eBay parts). I've thought of using it as a Home Theater PC, but I don't exactly need it.

I STILL think win2000 is a rock solid OS!

I'm going to see how linux will work on my large collection of music, mostly .flac files.

If it works out I will use the sound card 'out' to an external amp. Then rock out while drinkin' a few brews :)

I have a P3 600 MHz running windows 98 but I usually boot in into Puppy Linux as it gives me better compatibility with USB devices without having to find and install drivers.

My Ex also runs 98 on a laptop P3 600MHz he tends to use this over Puppy Linux for some of the windows progs he uses such as Win amp. He used to have windows ME which was preinstalled and he got so fed up he thumped it and crashed the hard drive. Replaced it and installed 98 on it, great improvement.

I have XP on my laptop but the other day at my new job I turned on a computer and briefly traveled back through time when I saw the Windows95 logo appear on the screen. It was weird to see everything look so plain. It only gets used three times a year so the owners see no reason to update it.

98 is a nightmare. Nothing works, not even a simple frigging USB flash drive. If I need to access a Win 98 HD I usually use Knoppix.

Makes me think of the software cd you load and go to the readme file and it starts by saying "To read this file insert cd into drive." Duh!

Or again An Italian Guidebook to Rome comes to mind " As you round the corner you will find a fine round square."

Sorry, as you were.
