The vast majority of movies that are released in January and February are the rejects from last year. The studios didn't think they were good enough to release during the lucrative Summer (blockbusters) or Fall (Oscar contenders) movie seasons, so they thrown them out early in the year to get rid of them and make whatever money they can off of them. So, I don't have much hope for this or any other movie that comes out in the next several weeks.

The only good movies that come out now are the ones that the studios quickly released in December in limited numbers of theaters so they could squeak by the Oscar-contention deadline and are now releasing more widely. Dreamgirls is one of those. Brokeback Mountain was last year.

I'll probably watch it only because I love Hilary Swank but Freedom Writers looks way too much like Dangerous Minds. Good hearted white teacher reaches out to the inner city students and makes a difference. I don't know.....

Yes, I wanna see this one. Hilary Swank's in it, and because I'm also a teacher. ..|

The background is a little similar to Dangerous Minds - white female teacher and inner city teens. The premise is totally different -the book it's based on (Freedom Writers Diaries) is much different than LouAnne Johnson's My Posse Don't Do Homework (later renamed Dangerous Minds).

There are too many of these 'lets help the poor inner city kids by teaching them to dance/ act/ sing/ write' movies now. It's getting a bit redundant and ridiculous because it's so far from reality it's funny.

Well, that's the thing, they're all based on "true stories."

According to all of these movies, you can walk into any inner-city high school and be treated to dance performances and poetry slams.

Thanks for the info, hopefully the movies are much different as well. I've always enjoyed movies like this so I'll probably go see it.

That's what I thought at first. I immediately thought it was a disposable movie, but then I found out more about the true story that Freedom Writers is based upon. I saw clips of the show on television and there's one scene with a hispanic female student who really blows the roof off with her acting skill. It's ironic that after all these years with so many movies about "bad" uninspired students and a teacher who changes their lives, there are still so many poor and unfunded schools. It's a shame because then students turn to violent lives full of drugs and crime. Plus, Hilary Swank always gets me emotional. She has that tendency. I've heard that Freedom Writers doesn't pull any punches, so that's a good sign.

i will. i bought the freedom writers diary and thought it was amazing. i cried at some parts of the book.

I would sooner be tied to a burning stake than see this cliche of "liberal white teacher comes in and helps poor disadvantaged overcome" tripe.

LMAO! That's exactly what it is. Don't let the smooth taste fool you. Every actor tries to get some shit like this on their resume. White or black, a teacher that goes into an inner city school and makes a difference.

I hate these kinds of movies. Especially since 98% of them have 28 year old actors pretending to be 15 making really pitiful attempts at trying to speak slang and sound "hip" and "ghetto."

It looks really good. I know there are alot of moives made about helping inner city kids but in reality most of them need it. I used to work with alot of them and not saying it happens like in the movies but they do want to be motivated to do things and just need that extra push.
